[Last updated on: Sun Sep 6 12:34:51 1998] Welcome to Idealcopy, the Wire mailing list. LIST HISTORY The list has existed since February 24, 1998, when smoe.org graciously agreed to host the list. As of September 5, 1998, it has about 120 subscribers. THE RULES There aren't many, and this is them: 1) The list is primarily for discussion of Wire or Wire-related music. 2) Discussion of other artists, especially contemporaries or descendents of Wire, will naturally occur. This is fine by me, as long as we find our way back to Gilbert/Lewis/Newman/Gotobed eventually. 3) Flames will not be tolerated. Keep a civil tongue, cheeking or no, in your head. THE ARCHIVES The list is archived in digest form at . SOME GOOD IDEAS 1) Save this "Welcome to Idealcopy" message for future reference. If you want to unsubscribe or subscribe another address, it will come in handy. 2) Send us a happy, chirpy initial post right after you subscribe, saying who you are, how you became interested in Wire, favorite albums & songs, etc. 3) Then make your way to the archives (see above) and go through several digests, so you'll have some idea of what people talk about, what has been discussed previously, and how folks conduct themselves on the list. 4) Use quoting, and use it judiciously. This may be old hat to you net veterans, but the most aggravating things a person can do on a reply is to not quote at all (thus leaving the readers grasping for context) OR unnecessarily quote everything (wasting bandwidth and people's time). Quote the specific sections of the previous message which you are addressing in your new post, append your comments beneath each pertinent section, and you'll be fine. 5) If you're on the digest version of the list and sending a reply to the list, please pleASE PLEASE change the subject of your message to something besides "Re: idealcopy-digest V1 #19"! That conveys nothing to the reader about what your message is really about! If you're replying to a message in the digest where the subject is "Colin Newman bit my dog," make "Re: Colin Newman bit my dog" the subject of your message. 6) DO NOT send an e-mail to the list with HTML content. It will bounce. You may not realize that you're sending a message with "styles," since almost all of the newfangled mail programs (Eudora Pro 4.0, Outlook Express, and Netscape's mail client) are set by default to send things out with pretty styles included. Unfortunately, many mail readers cannot process this information, so they wouldn't be able to read your message even if it was allowed to go out to the list at large. Usually these programs have some sort of switch that will change the default to "text only," or will at least warn you if you are about to send out a message with styles included. I will be happy to help you find that configuration switch if you can't find it yourself. THE DIGEST The list also exists in digest form -- i.e., you get one large message per day rather than a lot of individual messages. To subscribe to the digest version of the list, send an e-mail message to majordomo@smoe.org with the following command in the message body: subscribe idealcopy-digest (Information on how to subscribe and unsubscribe is also at ) Questions about list administration should go to me at wireadmin@mindspring.com. Thanks for subscribing, and enjoy your stay on idealcopy! -- Miles Goosens
