It was great! It was SO good to see Carly looking wonderful and looking like SHE was having a great time and not just her audience! And did you see that SIZE of the audience? Hundreds, if not a thousand or so! A nice treat that Sally and Ben were there also! And if you looked real quick in one of the audience shots during YOU'RE SO VAIN, you could see Clive Davis singing/clapping along! I hope she enjoyed herself enough with this appearance that she'll do a tour. Answering my question about just that topic when she did the Barnes/Noble live chat, she DID say she will be doing some concerts. Let's hope so! (Carly! Don't forget Chicago!) :) BIG DUMB GUY (my fave), IS a catchy tune. Like Kevin, I STILL have it running through my head! I still think ARISTA (are ya listening, Clive?) made a big mistake not choosing DUMB GUY as a single. SO MANY STARS is a great song, but...look, DUMB GUY still has me and Kevin mentally singing it! I think the only chance STARS has is if ARISTA really gets behind it...or at least allows Carly to make a video for it! Perhaps I was influenced by the comments in this list and/or the forum at james-taylor/carly web page... It seems everybody was trying to find the best single for radio airings or comparing the disk with past CS's work. So I had like preconceived ideas of the songs and some expectations so that when I finally listened it I was not sure if I liked it or no. Really, I was trying to figure out, eyes closed while listening, what if this song were on the radio, and so on. Then I realised that most of Carly's songs are not specifically written to hit the radio. It was untill then that I started to really like the album and put each song like "in context"... TBT has different moods and accordingly the songs sound like a compilation, as if they were from different productions and then put altogether in another. Yes, you can say Big Dumb Guy and Our Affair are rythmic funky. So Many Stars for slow dancing. One of my favourites, thou very sad, is Scar... i love the feelings she gives it, followed by Cross The River... i can't take off my head I'm Just The Kind... I am so happy Carly gave us TBT because (although i would like to listen it on the radio) I'm sure we Carly fans are pleased with her talent, spirit and performance in her new release. Thank you Carly! Margarita. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 May 2000 20:11:18 +0100 From: catman Subject: Re: Lovely Whenever I hear a new Carly cd, i am disappointed. Then by the time I have listened to it for the 4th time I usually think it is the best she has ever done! I have another week to go before I get to here the album-it is realeased here on the 29th. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 May 2000 14:11:32 -0400 From: Scott Fifield Subject: I'm Really The Kind Interesting, but when I listen to this new CD (and I've listened to nothing else for the past week), this song: "I'm Really The Kind" is the one I find going through my head...it's the only one I find myself singing when the CD isn't around, and I'm alone. It is SUCH a catchy melody...and her voice shines on this track, especially the smooth way she delivers the line: "have tantrums like silver slanting rain...like a lion up a mad mountainside..." I don't think this song has any chance of being played on radio, but that's really not the point with Carly, is it? I mean there are always a couple tracks on her albums that are "accessible" but the best cuts are usually hidden in the albums. "Scar" is my favorite, but "I'm Really The Kind" is probably my second favorite. Subject: Re: Film Noir - Date: 2/12/98 9:50 PM Eastern Standard Time From: MrsRhale Message-id: <19980213025000.VAA11310@ladder02.news.aol.com> Hello all, I've read the posts back through the eighth. I tell you, it's so amazing that there is a girl who lives inside my body and has my thoughts and actions and fears and dreams and domestic problems and stinky chicken in the "frigidaire" and no more comet under the sink and "tantrums like silver slanting rain" and that you find me interesting enough to write about me when I'm not there. It's humbling, but I also realize that when I'm not there you are very good at keeping a drama alive. You're good screen writers and should get together and make a lot of money. The 'silver slanting rain' line comes from a new song of mine. I am writing an album about New York Women. It will be 12 songs that will each be dedicated to one character. Some of them so far are: a teacher at Columbia who is brought out of retirement to teach a favorite course in literature (sad ending), a young aspiring actress (up-beat and positively meglomaniacal), two women in search of prescription drugs and naughtiness in general),a woman who lives over a subway grate, the ex-wife of a rich stock broker who lives five stories over her and whose eye she wants to catch to make him feel guilty; There are so many stories in the big naked city and it's hard to stop at 12 because what an inspiring bunch of females this City boasts. Even the sorriest and sleaziest of them is a story and there are stories within stories within stories. Making them sing is another thing. I have been so invested in all of the energy Ben is putting in to his writing. He has written 15 songs in two months. It's just ridiculous. Sally is singing with two groups in Boulder and I wish I could hear what it sounds like. I'll have to make a trip out there. She is quite something, with a full academic schedule and TWO bands. Sometimes I get the urge just to let the torch pass. I talked to James last night who is in Italy on tour. We are both so proud of them and it's tempting to quit and ask them to take care of US for a little bit. I'm excited about the Grammys, but I heard yesterday, that my category (best vocals on a traditional album, as well as best arrangement for "Laura"--Arif Mardin) are to be presented in the preshow. Too bad. I was looking forward to one of those awkward moments where I pretend to be soooooo happy for Tony Bennett. It's so much fun to talk to you all. And love always, Carly ------------------------------ End of hotcakes-digest V3 #9 ****************************
