The singer has bolted Boston just a year after moving there from New York. Simon's move to Boston came when she said she couldn't afford her lifestyle here and fled after refusing to cave in to her landord's demands for increased rent on her 11-room Central Park West apartment, to $8,000 from $2,500 per month. Carly Simon Simon chose Boston because it was close to her home on Martha's Vineyard. She reportedly plunked down $1.5 million for a four-story townhouse in Beacon Hill and soon began renovating it to the tune of $800,000. Well, so much for all of that. The townhouse is on the market for a reported $3.9 million and there's plenty of talk as to why. Beantown sources say Simon incurred the wrath of her neighbors by playing music too loud during rehearsals with other musicians. Rather than fight, she decided to move, sources say. Simon's assistant confirmed that the Beacon Hill house is for sale, but insists that the singer's decision to sell had nothing to do with the neighbors. "It's a private matter," the assistant said. Given that Simon confirmed last year she was battling breast cancer, I asked whether health played a part in her decision to leave Boston. "Absolutely not," I was assured. "She is completely recovered from breast cancer." And now living exclusively on Martha's Vineyard, which isn't too shabby, even if it's your only home. - -- CARLY SIMON DISCUSSION LIST http://www.ethericcats.demon.co.uk/ethericcats/index.html TANTRA’S/ETHERIC PERSIANS AND HIMALAYANS http://www.ethericcats.demon.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 May 99 04:10:43 GMT From: kg@ibm.net (Kenneth Grant) Subject: Re: from Tom Hi folks, Most of you probably don't recognize my name as I haven't posted anything to the Carly list in ions, though I do lurk from time to time and appreciate everyone's contributions and the overall exchange. I have a deep respect for Carly and love her music, even though I only own a couple of her records (I originally joined this list to support Colin, who I became friendly with on the Joni list -- Joni's my first musical love, but I've been just barely lurking on that list for a while as well due to a currently hectic schedule). As for where Carly chooses to make her home, my only hope is that she's happy, healthy, and comfortable. I would think that cash wouldn't be much of a concern for her, but it's not my place to pass judgements on that. But as a New Yorker, it was hard for me to read this post and not comment. A rent of $2500/mo. on Central Park West is a BARGAIN for a ONE bedroom apartment. Central Park West is among the most affluent/exclusive areas of NYC. $2500 for an 11-room apartment is all but *unheard of* My guess is that even $8,000/mo. for 11 rooms in that part of town is WELL BELOW current market prices. Of course, the very definition of "market price" is the price one is willing to pay for something -- I guess Carly didn't feel that the place was worth it, or maybe she was just pissed off by a 313% rent increase... But then again, who wouldn't be! :-) Best to all, -Kenny On 5/11/1999 1:19PM, catman wrote: Carly Hits the Road Again Carly Simon seems to be turning into a nomad.
