Hi Jenn and welcome to the list.. :) Glad you have found an interest in Carly's music. I too discovered her music when I was sixteen.. But that was a loooooong time ago.. lol She doesn't get much airplay here in Australia, except on the 60's & 70's hits station.. (occasionally) Your suggestion of the "song of the week" sounds good. I will be interested in the comments from the remainder of the list.. Cheers Kevin.. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 07:06:53 -0600 From: Jim.Nemeth@infores.com (Jim Nemeth) Subject: Re: New here :) long message... Hi Jenn, Welcome to the list. Don't worry about your "long" message, I loved reading it. Loved your comment that if it gets below 50 degrees you're freezing! Come back up to Illiois, we're having some LOVELY weather here lately (NOT! :) I love the idea of a "song of the week".. )____________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: New here :) long message... Author: HammyCD@aol.com at INTERNET-mail Date: 3/9/99 7:06 PM Hello all! My name's Jenn and I'm new to this list, and new to Carly, in a manner of speaking anyhow. I'm 16 years old (am I the youngest here?), from Florida, although I've moved around a lot. Since I was a baby I've known who James Taylor was, I still remember when I was 5 years old seeing him sing "Jelly Man Kelly" on Sesame Street and later telling my baby-sitter that he was my favourite singer -- and she didn't even know who he was! (I was shocked, I figured everybody did.) I'm sure my parents also played Carly -- when I "rediscovered" some of our older cassette tapes I recognized many of the songs, although not to the extent than I remembered them. (did that make sense to anybody other than me?) Anyhow, my musical tastes changed...it wasn't until I was 13 that I began getting into actually owning music. My tastes now include basically anything. Celine Dion (one of my favourites) to Livingston Taylor (whom I had the privilege of seeing/"meeting" (very quickly) two years ago), and many new artists -- very much a part of the Lilith Fair genre -- including Tara MacLean, Heather Nova, Emm Gryner, Chantal Kreviazuk and Sarah Slean. Anyhow, since I moved down here 6 years ago I've listened to the "Champions of Breakfast" morning show on two different radio stations, the most recent being Sunny 104.3. (This does have a point, please bare with me :)) Truthfully the music on the show gets a bit repetitive, but the two members of the morning show were worth it. Recently Kevin Kitchens, one half of the duo, died of a sudden heart attack at age 39. His partner and best friend of 14 years went on air the next day (an amazing feat in my humble opinion!) along with the producer and other family and friends -- he was loved by the whole community for his wonderful personality, humour, and work with the Special Olympics. That morning they celebrated Kevin's life...by playing old clips of him, and his music. Which was all Carly and James. He had always snuck a few of their songs on to the playlist, although he wasn't supposed to. Anyhow, the following few days, including the day the radio station had a memorial which I attended (funny how a man whom I never met affected my life so much) they played a majority of music from Carly and James. Sadly, through Kevin's death I was finally motivated to buy some Carly CDs, and update my James ones. I never realized how many of her songs I knew -- and that Kevin had snuck into the show! My first goal was to merely find a CD with the song "Love Of My Life" -- it was the last song Jennifer (his partner) played for him, their favourite...the one they played "whenever something good happened" -- and she played it as the last song that day, and as a tribute to him (very emotional, a tearjerker...for days after if I heard that song I'd tear up). (As well as "Nobody Does It Better," which was the first song.) About a week later, when she returned to the morning show she mentioned that it was harder to find that song...so I figured I'd just buy any CD. I chose No Secrets - it was the cheapest one there! First thing I noticed was that I knew most of the album (I later found out we had a cassette tape of it). After that I got "Have You Seen Me Lately?" and dug up an old cassette of "Hotcakes" --- all of which I love! I've been unable to get to somewhere to buy CDs since there, but I'm planning to take it slowly. I know how many albums I'm missing, but I want to savor the "newness." As well, I have the tribute tapes from the days following Kevin's death -- all which feature many of Carly's more well known songs. I'd guess I'd say my favourite Carly song would be "Love Of My Life," at least for now...manly because of Jennifer's tribute to Kevin -- and thus it made me think of how it correlates to me and my best friend. Other favourites include "Life is Eternal" --- another explanation. The day Kevin died, and at his memorial, Jennifer stated that "God forbid what happened to Kevin happens to somebody you love. Tell them you love them NOW." I was busy, but I told myself I'd call my best friend the next day...and I said that again...and another day. Then one night I came home and heard a message from my friend, asking me to call her...any time, just call. Her voice was so desperate and urgent, something I had never heard in the 11 years I'd known her. I knew something was wrong, somebody was hurt. Sadly it was a close friend of hers, who died of a heart failure on the soccer field. A few weeks later she noticed some heart palpitations and is looking into it. So the reminder that "death is only a horizon" is something I really need right now. And I basically adore the whole "No Secrets" album :) probably because it was my first! The Carter Family; Embrace Me, You Child; and It Was So Easy are my favourite tracks though. As for myself...16, female, I'm from Florida - and consider myself a Floridian now (considering if it gets below 50 I'm freezing :)), but I was born in Michigan, and grew up in Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Illinois, other areas of Michigan, and Georgia. I love reading and writing, listening to music, and swimming. Was that a long enough message? :) As well, I know I'm new, but I'd love to throw out a suggestion -- on a few mailing lists I'm on we do "Song of the Week" where the organizer chooses a song of the week...and everyone contributes what they think of it -- vocals, lyrics, melody...and shares personal stories, such as I did above. Other things are still discussed, this just gives the option for in-depth discussions. :) Anyhow, I hope to talk to all of you again very soon! Sorry for the long message :) Jenn ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 11:30:14 -0600 From: Margarita Leal Subject: RE: new here:) long message... Hello, Jenn, and be very welcome to the list: I loved your message and after the initial shock (you are 16, I am 40) I felt so good young people really like Carly Simon. As a coincidence, my first CS album was No Secrets... I am the oldest, have six brothers and no sisters, so by the time I has 14 my youngest brother was only months old. It was Christmas and Santa Claus brought a compact/portable turntable with a strap to hang it on with you and some LPs, one of them was No Secrets, which I loved (love and will ever love) and spent long hours while listening, looking at the beautiful Carly picture. I love all the songs but just like you, my favourites are The Carter Family and It Was So Easy but it is very hard to choose from that album since I love the whole thing. My second favourite album as a whole is Boys In The Trees. Now me and my husband have every album on CD as well as her videos. I find the idea you shared for the Song Of The Week very refreshing and we should try it. Hello my e-friends: I am so excited I can hardly catch my breath. Just two hours ago while I was having lunch at home my husband told me he accepted a post in Germany, where he made his doctorate degree. We were there in summer 1997 and I really loved the city and because I speak fluently in german I didn't have any trouble with his peers; I even made friends with two women doctors there and I am very happy because we're going to live there. I just stepped out from my boss' office and the company agreed to give me my accumulated benefits after 18 years working here... uuhhh that's a lot of money, approximately 20 months salary. I already arranged some other stuff: our house is sold to my youngest brother who is getting married next September; my car is sold to another of my six brothers; my husband's car is sold to his niece; and I will keep some real estate I have here. We are only packing our clothes, our music and, piano and guitar music sheets... my piano is sold to one girlfriend of mine and my guitar... I am taking that with me... my electro acoustic Takamine... lovely! So we are all set and almost on the run! All of a sudden ... wow! Well, and you will think: we don't care about this Margarita business... But my actual e-mail will be available untill the end of March; after that, it will only be margaleal@hotmail.com as far as I know so... Catman: please include my new address to the Hotcakes list and if you want remove the old one or leave it untill the end of this month. We will keep in touch and I am having some farewell parties this evenings thru the weekend. Auf wiedersehen, Tschüß! Margarita. ------------------------------ End of hotcakes-digest V2 #44 *****************************
