["Renata Cristina Bastos de Paiva" Subject: Memories Hello everybody, Here is the list of albums that i've listenned over and over again: Hotcakes, Playing Possum and Boys in the trees. The first one reminds me when I was a child and I sang these songs to my brothers and sisters (because I sang well at that time...). Playing possum because I think it represents the best Carly' vocal performance. Finally, Boys in the trees reminds me the summer, the sun and the heat, at home, in Spain, listenning these songs with windows open wide in the middle of the night. Beijos, Renata Cristina ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 20:08:05 EST From: Whydja@aol.com Subject: from the AOL Board (AP) February 1999 This month Target stores across the nation released a new audio cassette by singer-songwriter Carly Simon on her new label LITTLE SIMON, a Simon & Schuster publication. This is nothing so dull as some of Simon's previous Once Upon A Time storytelling efforts, wherein you would fall fast asleep before the story was even interesting. On this current recording, the artist moves at an upbeat pace; provoking vivid imagery and then withdrawing it as quickly as flash cards. You have to stay alert to keep up with her. And while these may be nursery rhymes set to music, they certainly are not lullabies. Simon has chosen (very well) a unique alternative to traditional storytelling. Probably the most notable musical creation on this tape belongs to her wonderful interpretation of the classic Old Mother Hubbard. Carly's perfect elocution, her vibrant smoky timbre, combined with a unique and impressive piano solo by Dr. John, makes this one of the most memorable songs on the album. This song inspires you to jump to your feet and waddle across the room. Setting a fine example that all of us can overcome our limited verbal capabilities, she playfully sings the mock magarine ballad Betty Botter without a trace of her famous stuttering. If I put it in my batter It will make my batter bitter But a bit of better butter Will make my batter better The vigor with which she delivers the somewhat risque Lavender Blue effectively contradicts its vagueness. Call up my maids at four o'clock, Some to the wheel and some to the rock; Some to make hay and some to shear corn, and you and I will keep the bed warm. On Little Miss Muffet the emphasis placed on "spider" is alarming at first, but the eventual outcome is innocent enough - unless you stop to ponder the meaning of words like tuffet, curds and whey. Her use of brevity in singing these rhymes is perhaps best exemplified in Humpty Dumpty. While one is saddened by the apparent fate of the rotund character, ending the song with Couldn't put Humpty together again compels the listener to ponder the possibilities. Perhaps the only disappointment on this tape is the pabulum filled Mary Had A Little Lamb, which could have been left off entirely. Simon, a prolific writer of children's books and music has provided us with a musically colorful look at the the world of Mother Goose rhymes. While some may have heard these stories before, this tape will surely entertain you for months on end, if not years of continual play. It was thoughtfully put together so that each side (5:54) contains the exact same songs, so an auto- reverse tape deck is all that is needed for uninterrupted listening enjoyment.
