If I'm not mistaking, there's a little photo of Menemsha also on the back of HBM's LP. Margarita, I think we have the same taste for Carly's songs: "The Carter Family" (No Secrets) sweetly reminds me of my childhood and "Libby" (Another Passenger) sort of like describes everything I was dreaming of in my 20s: I love it too. There are two songs on "Letters Never Sent" which I particularly like but I can't remember their names right now ("I'm lost in your love" or something like that, and the one she composed to her mom in memoriam.) Well, let's keep the thing going... Cheers to you all. Hello dear e-friends: Regarding the covers matter I must agree with Ana Lucia because my favorite cover is also Torch, closely followed by No Secrets, the latter being also my favorite album as a hole, for mainly two reasons: (1) I like the songs. (2) It was my first contact with Carly because Santa Claus brought this LP one Christmas. I feel a shivering every time I listen to a non hit song from No Secrets, and this is The Carter Family... and very nostalgic I get when I listen to It Was So Easy. Nowadays, I also love Boys In The Trees, the whole album but especially the title song. Regarding Hello Big Man, well I can't remember now which song I don't like. One of my favorite songs is also Libby, from Another Passenger. For some reason, whenever I play it I remember the first day I played the album. My father was in the living room reading and after that song (the second on the LP) played he said, "Who is that?" "Carly Simon, why?" I responded. He replied, "Just that that happens to be a wonderful song." I agreed, and I think of him whenever I hear it. I like the message of the Carter Family -- it is so true. I have to admit, though, for the first several years that I had the album I used to ask myself, "Why would somone want to 'moan' in bed?" Nice to know that at some point I actually was naive! However, Libby was my first prefered song of Another Passenger and in my opinion, one of the best of Carly. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Jan 1999 09:47:53 -0600 From: Margarita Leal Subject: RE: Letters never sent Ana Lucia: The song in LNS to her mother is Like A River and it is lovely... Wisdom Teeth One day a man walks into a dentist's office and asks how much it will cost to extract wisdom teeth. "Eighty dollars," the dentist says. "That's a ridiculous amount," the man says. "Isn't there a cheaper way?" "Well," the dentist says, "if you don't use an anaesthetic, I can knock it down to $60." "That's still too expensive," the man says. "Okay," says the dentist. "If I save on anesthesia and simply rip the teeth out with a pair of pliers, I could get away with charging $20." "Nope," moans the man, "it's still too much." "Hmm," says the dentist, scratching his head. "If I let one of my students do it for the experience, I suppose I could charge you just $10." I agree. I was really surprised by how innovative Letters Never Sent is. But I remember listening to the album for the first time. The first song "Letters Never Sent" came on and I thought, "Gee, the music really sucks to this song." Several years later, I still think that song is very weak musically, but the rest of the CD is very strong. LNS (the song) has no appeal to me, although the idea of writing a song about the letters (actually feelings) one has never sent (expressed) is great! Oh! And that song for her mom, with that chorus at the end: it is something special. The "I'm lost in my love for you...." , the way it is sung, reminds me of "I'm Hurt" (Torch) and of something similar in Film Noir (I'll check tonight and let you know tomorrow). In Brazil, the same: family ties are still strong, but the "way of life" imposed by globalisation is, little by little, corrupting some old interesting values. Let's see where that will take us all... Saludos cordiales Cheers! Now, the only two songs that I love are Touched by the sun ( wonderful and nice singing with her ) and Davy because it reminds me my old Celtic origins and it's beautiful. I hope that the new album will be very different that LNS. During my holydays I re-decovered, Film Noir. ( i've listened it every night, in bed) I don't liked it so much but now I think is great. I love the orchestration, her voice and I felt like I was carried away into one black and white film beside Lauren Bacall... or all the others... It 's really very good.
