From a JT newsletter..... Vineyard Auction A Martha's Vineyard charity auction took in $13,000 for a walk on the beach with JT and a package of Carly Simon's guitar, personal song, and peanut butter sandwiches topped all other bids at $40,000. See the stories at the Vineyard Gazette and the Boston Globe. Thanks Tom. I would love to have been there. Mind you I couldn't have bid for anything! Maybe when i go to the US again, I'll drive around Martha's Vineyard and hope. catman ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Aug 1998 22:51:45 +0100 From: catman Subject: ALONE my goin has nothing to do with you i'm just planning a trip all alone and all i want is a room with a view where the sight of the sunset full blown makes me ache with feeling alone I love this song. It shows of her voice well, particularly it's deepness. Amazingly, listening to this album, her first, and then to Letters Never Sent, her voice really hasn't changed or deteriorated in the 25 yrs between these albums. Her first two albums are very special to me. The hours I spent laying in a dark room just playing them over and over. I love the simplicity of them. No Secrets and Hotcakes were quite different in sound. Then Playing Possum has it's own sound. Another Passenger has quite a country feel to it. Boys In The Trees has a sound all it's own, in fact more than one on this album-it is a bit jumbled in that sense(I do not say that as criticism at all). Then we get SPY which i feel is one of her best, again quite different from what went before. Come Upstairs, especially the second side, really surprised me. In Pain is is terrific, her voice really lends itself to that sort of song. Raw, with sharp edges. Gives me bumps!(Of course cd's don't have 2nd sides-showing my age here!) On the LP In Pain opened the second side! catman - -- Living is the process whereby we create the structures we call meaning. http://www.ethericcats.demon.co.uk Carly Simon Discussion List http://www.ethericcats.demon.co.uk/ethericcats/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Aug 1998 18:13:54 -0500 From: Margarita Leal Subject: Going to The Vineyard Hello CATMAN and everyone! The waiting is killing me... i should be working ... and i am but... every time my Outlook ticks, i can not resist the temptation to take a look and many (many, many, many, many times) it is somebody from this list. It feels good to relax with the comments of such beautiful people, meaning people with sensibility for Carly's opus. One friend from this list (i will omit her name) wrote back to me only, not to the list, telling me she was surprised she and i share almost the same Carly's selection of best songs, but she wrote directly to me because she was overwhelmed with too many messages every day and so she decided to unsubscribe. I have to admit that i myself sometimes feel it is too much... i used to enter only twice a week to the Carly Simon Online Discussion Board at ziva.com and "updated" my readings of the messages and sometimes felt i should answer to one of them. But like i bet everybody by now knows, Ziva is like in suspended animation; i even wrote (or at least i thought i did) an email to ziva asking where the discussion board had gone, since it was the only thing made me feel ziva was alive, but until now, no answer... Well, but the title is Going to the Vineyard... Last year i got married for the very first time at age 39 and went to some european countries for honey moon: my husband was living in Germany when he was studing for his doctorate degree and was in France and England for shorter periods ... i had never been to Europe and he had never been to New York in the USA ... well, he showed me around in Europe last year and i will take him to NYC and the New England area and some cities of Canada. I have been there three times already but never been to Martha's Vineyard and this year i think we are gonna make it there. I now that Carly is living in Boston right now (i think i know 'cos actually i read about it at one board) but who knows? maybe she and her family will be there having summer vacations and by some kind of chance we might see her in the flesh. (daydreamin is for free, isn't it?) Hey, catman, not the only but one of my favourite songs is Boys In The Trees, and many of us could be thirty something, fourty or even fifty something like contemporaries to Carly. It is refreshing when i read there are teenagers or twenty something people here who also like Carly... maybe they were introduced to her by their parents, else, how would they know? never mind! The good news is that her music and her message is alive and kicking, for our mutual benefit. I am boring everybody and guess is time to say so long guys (and me go back to work!) ... ... Margarita. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Aug 1998 03:36:51 +0100 From: catman Subject: Re: Going to The Vineyard I am really surprised you think there is too much mail on this list! There is hardly any. On the other list I am on we often get 100 posts a day and more! It averages about 70 a day. catman ------------------------------ End of hotcakes-digest V1 #12 *****************************
