But to be honest, there were some songs very "identifiable" with the times, like disco music from the mid seventies (My New Boyfirend for example). They are not ugly but, in my humble opinion, more comercial focused, and her extraordinary voice is lost among the funny music. I also like a perhaps not very popular The Carter Family from No Secrets. It makes me cry every time because it talks about the things we sometimes did wrong because of our immaturity as children or teenagers, like wasting friendships, time and advice from our grandmother, and also people we discarded as would be partners because we paid more attention to the opinions from our friends than to our own feelings. There is another song, which I think. is called Back Down To Earth ... very special also. Here in Mexico now is 17:42 hours and I am supposed to be working; actually my boss will call me at any time but by now i can listen Carly's congs in my mind as I think of them. Oh... ... there are so many like Boys In The Trees, Libby, I'll Be Around, Like A River, What Shall We Do With The Child, Orpheus, Life Is Eternal, etc. etc. ... I have a question: I have been reading the messages from this list and eventually Joni Mitchel is mentioned... I do not really know her, I "think" I've seen her picture somewhere, maybe it was in Time Magazine but a few years ago. Is she an american singer or what? Is she also a composer, meaning a song writer? Do you know if there is a "Hits" CD and if it is a good one so I can get to know her? Is she lovely as Carly? Maybe it is unbelievable, or so one thinks when there is someone, like me, who doesn't know about somebody who is very well known by us, like Joni... one wonders How can that be? Is she joking? But I'm not... I am indeed curious, would like to know. Well, I'll be here reading your messages ... maybe my husband knows her because he has more CDs than me regarding female singers. I must confess right here that I like other kind of music, like Progressive? rock from late 60's and 70's and my husband can not stand them... I even took him to a Yes concert here in my city las May 28th. To me it was great, as it has always been, but he did not like Yes at all, althogh he was very surprised to see how the place was filled with true devoted fans (like me) and many of them were his friends but he didn't know they liked Yes! I also like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis (earliest), Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Who, Jethro Tull, and oh... now I remember, me and my husban have one rock group in common : Queen !!! I also like blues and jazz. We also like classical. I am boring you... ... Thank you and so long ^_^ !!! Joni Mitchell is VERY different from Carly. Yes she is a singer/songwriter and has been making records since 1068. She wrote and sang Big Yellow Taxi but that was in 71 or something. Yes she has two Hits cd's. One is called HITS and the other MISSES. She has more of story telling style and is not melodic in the way Carly is. Her lyrics take quite a bit of listening to and deciphering and thinking about. excerpt from Cherokee Louise (from Night Ride Home 1991) tuesday after school we put our pennies on the rails and when the train went by we were jumpin round like fools goin look no heads or tails goin look my lucky prize she runs home to her foster dad he opens up a zipper and yanks her to her knees oh please be here - please my friend poor Cherokee Louise excerpt from Job's Sad Song(Turbulent Indigo 94) let me speak let me spit out my bitterness born of grief and nights without sleep and festering flesh do you have eyes? can you see like mankind sees? why have you soured and curdled me? oh you tirless watcher what have I done to you? that you make everything I dread and everything I fear come true I have all Joni's albums. There are many of her songs and one whole album I do not like. there is only one Carly song, Coming To Get You, that I do not like, tho I am not that keen on Film Noir. I cannot compare these two singer songwriters-they are very very different. I would feel hard pressed to choose one if I had to, say as for a desert island disc. I know that if i had to make that choice, it would have to be Carly-if I was on my own on a desert isle with just Joni to listen to, i think I would get too depressed! As much as i love her music, she isn't exactly a happy soul! I agree with you about Spoiled Girl being 'commercial' pop. I think Coming Around again is too. However, I still love both albums. Carly's voice is just not imitatable and her writing style still shines thru. Although she did not write it, I think Anyone But Me is outstanding for her vocals on this. She gives me goosebumps, her voice is so low. I can't sing that low! Also, Make Me Feel Something is pure Carly. Actually I love the whole album, exceptt the 2nd and 3rd tracks, tho even them in the right mood. On Coming Around Again I love Do Thewn, It Shoould Have Been me and All I Want Is You, The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of. The whole album is good. Have You Seen me Lately is getting back to the Carly I am used to and Letters Never Sent is just wonderful, particularly, Lost In Your Love, Like A River and Touched By The Sun. again I like the whole album. For me, Carly really knows how to write and sing a good, moving love song. I find her use of the sax on these type of songs just wonderful. Particularly like on Just Like You Do from SPY. A vastly underrated album, I think it is one of her best. catman ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Aug 1998 01:10:16 +0100 From: catman Subject: Carly and Madeline This was posted on the Forum so i thought you'd all like to see it. catman Simon link to 'Madeline' long By ADAM SANDLER, June 29, 1998 Many artists contribute a song to a film's soundtrack because they think it'll advance their recording career. But Carly Simon's interest in the soundtrack to "Madeline," the TriStar Pictures film set for release next month starring Academy Award-winner Frances McDormand and newcomer Hatty Jones as Madeline, goes much deeper. Her father, Richard Simon, a co-founder of publishing titan Simon & Schuster, helped "Madeline" author Ludwig Bemelmans land his first publishing deal in the 1930s. She was constantly reminded of the adventures of the perky redheaded Madeline because Bemelmans' original paintings that appeared in the book hung in Carly's room when she was a child. Tales find life The film brings Bemelmans' classic tales to life as it skillfully weaves elements of his original books into this new story: The indomitable Madeline devises a scheme for saving the school she lives in with her 11 friends after their patron dies and plans are made to sell the old house. The Sony Wonder/Sony Music Soundtrax features an original song by Carly Simon called "In Two Straight Lines," which the singer says was inspired by her unique connection to the "Madeline" stories. Also highlighting the album is Okeh/Epic Records artist Keb Mo, who warbles a stirring new version of "What a Wonderful World," the classic tune penned by George David Weiss and George Douglass that was made famous in 1968 by Louis Armstrong. The tune got a renewed life several years ago when it appeared in the Robin Williams starring film "Good Morning Vietnam." Legrand score Legendary composer Michel Legrand further rounds out the all-star lineup of musical talent to the "Madeline" soundtrack with his original score written for the film. The release of the film is the centerpiece of an aggressive marketing campaign by Sony Wonder, a sister company of TriStar Pictures, and the family division of Sony Music and Epic Records. The six original "Madeline" books that tell the tales of the courageous redheaded heroine have been strong sellers in the worldwide marketplace. More than 10 million copies of the series have been sold since their bow. In addition to the books, Sony Wonder and Golden Books have teamed to release two new animated "Madeline" homevideo titles on Tuesday to ignite interest in the upcoming film. An animated TV series currently airs five days a week on the Disney Channel. More Madeline Golden and Wonder are also prepping seven catalog homevideo titles for release, which will be repackaged and updated. The "Madeline" franchise now includes over 20 high-profile licensees covering apparel to toys. Simon, who first gained attention in the music world in 1971 with the hit "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be," last year released an ambitious boxed set, "Clouds in My Coffee," which boasted all of her classics and some previously unreleased nuggets. The Arista Records set, which culled material from her days on the Elektra, Epic, Warner and Arista Records labels, included such tunes as "You're So Vain," "Anticipation," "The Right Thing to Do" and "Haven't Got Time for the Pain," among others. Her soundtrack contributions have included "Nobody Does It Better," from the 1977 James Bond pic "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "Let The River Run," the 1989 20th Century Fox Film "Working Girl," starring Melanie Griffith and Harrison Ford, which earned Simon a best song Academy Award. - -- Living is the process whereby we create the structures we call meaning. http://www.ethericcats.demon.co.uk Carly Simon Discussion List http://www.ethericcats.demon.co.uk/ethericcats/index.html ------------------------------ End of hotcakes-digest V1 #10 *****************************
