I will say tho that there are more Joni songs, and one or two albums, that I do not like than there are Carly songs. The only selfpenned Carly I really do not like is Coming To Get You from Spy. And I am not too keen on Film Noir(not self penned), an album of film songs. I also like Dar Williams, Tracy Chapman, Nanci Griffith, old Donna Summer, Tori Amos(tho Boys for Pele is weird), Sinead O'conner, Carole King, Amanda Lear and Janis Ian. catman ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Jul 1998 01:50:49 +0930 From: Drew Subject: Re: oops Colin, I like the "Romulus Hunt" CD. You seem to have a nice collection of Carly's work. My suggestion for what you should buy next would be "Coming Around Again"....truly a Carly classic. After that I would probably recommend "Spy"...not really her best but the majority is just great...just a suggestion... While I do like some of Joni's work and have several of her cd's I have to admit that she kinda grates on me at times. I love all of her hits and a few others. I also really enjoy hearing her sing with JT...they have great chemistry....but still Carly is my girl... As for your taste in other female singers...excellent choices...I have loved Carole King since Tapestry...still a terrific cd to play from start to finish...she's a great songwriter. I also love Wrap Around Joy and Really Rosie....great kids record...The first Tracy Chapman record is awesome...her other stuff is good too...really like Matter of the Heart and "Subcity" from Crossroads. "Baby, Can I Hold You" is one of the best written songs in my opinion of all time...As far as Sinead...I didn't want to like her because of her rip up the pope's picture deal (I just thought it was a stupid move for her...what did she expect would happen? I still think alot of people hold it against her...and she's just a wierd chick anyway!). I do really like her music though. I love Emperor's New Clothes and Nothing Compares to You...but if you want the best song she's ever done you have to go to the Elton John Two Rooms cd...Her version of "Sacrifice" sends chills up my spine....such a great cover...if you haven't heard her do it I STRONGLY recommend you seek it out. Finally, it's great to find someone who likes Janis Ian. I am a long time fan of hers as well. I met her not too long ago when she was playing at our local Borders Bookstore...she's very nice. Between the Lines is just a fantastic record from start to finish...every song is brilliant. Have you ever heard her cd called "Stars"? That is just as great....another one I recommend you seek out...Just wanted to put in my two cents... What shall we do with the child Who's got your eyes, my hair and your smile, reminding me that we fell in love But just for a little while.... Another favorite is from Hello Big Man's "You Know What To Do" We make love like a house on fire We make love like dogs gone mad Sometimes I'll just never understand.... and one more from Hello Big Man "It Happens Everyday" It happens every day After you break up and say these words to your friends: How could I have loved that boy He was so bad to me in the end. Well, you make him a liar Turn him into a robber Well, it happens everyday But I don't regret that I loved you How I loved you I will never forget And in time I'll look back and remember The boy that I knew when we first met. Still it happens every day Two lovers turn and twist their love into hate but am I so different from that young girl you used to date You used to adore me You used to adore me Still it happens every day..... More great lyrics are found in these great songs that I love... The Right Thing To Do Forever My Love The Love Of My Life and so many many more.... I remember listening to all of these over and over and over as in my room with headphones on and singing my heart out....or just sitting in the dark and listening to Carly albums from start to finish... thanks for asking.. It is appreciated. I listened to Hotcakes today and enjoyed it. I don't think I will ever feel passionately about it, although I truely like many of the songs. I love the spirit of her. Her honesty and willingness to be truely intimate and playful in her songs is a gift. Don't yell at me, but I think her craftmanship is loose at times. She (in my limited opinion) is not a poet. She doesn't often touch my soul. Her use of language doesn't thrill me. It is a strange thing as I do really like her. I am still in the midst of my Carly fest, so who knows a light bulb may still go off. (Colin - Don't hate me for this) I think you got me confused with someone, or I sent a post in my sleep, because I don't remember listing other women songwriters I like. I will now. Joni of course Shawn Colvin Rosanne Cash (post country stuff) Patty Griffin Patty Larkin Kate Bush (1st 4 or 5 albums mostly) I am going a bit brain dead here. I have to look through my collection Men: James Taylor Some Dan Fogelberg (saw him two weeks ago) Paul Simon Some David Bowie Cat Stevens Old David Wilcox There are so many more, both men and women, but this is who came to mind first. Anyway, thanks again for responding, and it is nice to know that there are people out there who don't think that Joni's music is like having a clear channel to god. That gives me some perspective. To me, she always has been the very best of the best. My awe of her silenced me as a songwriter for a long time. I believed that with her music in the world, there was no reason to add mine. I did finally snap out of it and get the courage to write. If Carly had been my passion, I would have felt that there was more space to write in. It would have been liberating, but I could't see that then. I don't know if anyone understands this. It is wonderful how powerful songs are in people's lives. I have met folks who don't listen to music. I don't understand that. It feels sad to me, but then there are probably things that enrich their lives that I have no receptors for. I hope I don't offend anyone.
