As a reminder, the Cafe is part of the WXPNs assorted programs to augment its local broadcasting and the Mr. Dye's World Cafe Live which can be heard on NPR.org nationally. The forum attracts former residents of Philly who now live around the globe such as I, as well as followers of Mr. Dye who read his postings to the forum. - --------paragraph break--------- Written by jtd7 @ http://www.xpnonline.org/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=29757&p=314542&hilit=hamlin#p31 4542Kind of a belated review here but I don't want it to slip away without sharing. Last Wednesday, Feb 27, we heard Trina Hamlin at World Cafe Live upstairs. I heard Trina Hamlin a couple times last year supporting Susan Werner and was quite taken with her voice and her musicianship. This was my first opportunity to hear her solo and she did not disappoint.--------paragraph break---------Trina Hamlin performed solo. She has a gorgeous soprano voice but she can also descend to a bluesy growl. She explores alternate guitar tunings with different colors for each song. Even solo, she uses a range of dynamics. And she is a total musician, accompanying herself on guitar, piano, harmonica, and percussion. Trina is also an engaging performer, with a warm and natural sense of humor. Her set comprised mainly originals:A ThoughtBeautifulJacarandaToo BeautifulLiving On LoveLazy River (very nice slide guitar playing)Down To The HollowCenterpiece (the Johnny Mandel / Jon Hendricks lyric)You Can't Remember What I Can't ForgetTake You As You AreOne Good ReasonWrappedOh, Darling (Beatles)--------paragraph break---------Somewhere in there she also sang a blues "Happy Birthday" to a friend in the audience. She made fun of "Down To The Hollow," calling it a "traditional Minnesota blues number;" but then she gave it an outstanding performance, accompanying herself on harmonica and tambourine. She introduced her ballad "Wrapped" by telling us it was inspired by seeing a friend fall in love, but he fell in love for the first time, so he fell all the way without holding back like those of us do who have been hurt before. I'm paraphrasing, and badly, but the heart and honesty in that story comes through in her music. She sang two encores: Taj Mahal's "Bourgeois Blues" (at least what she could remember of it ) and Jimi Hendrix's "Sweet Angel" The last was sung a capella, and it took my breath away.--------paragraph break---------EDIT: Here's a telling detail I neglected to mention. If you've ever been to WCL, you know that a freight rail line crosses over the street about a block down. During her set she commented on a train passing, and worked it into the song intro she was delivering at that moment. But I realized that, while I could see the train, she could not. From the stage it was behind her. She must have heard it, and I could not. That's how sensitive she is to sounds, and she responds to them immediately and naturally. - --------paragraph break--------- I hope this comes out readable. I am still trying to figure out what happens to the typeset after it passes through the Hollow. If anyone would like a direct email copy, please let me know. And Ms. Hamlin, Ms. Trace Walker is doing a monthly show of In-The-Round in case you ever are feeling under-worked. I will duck now! All the best to you and yours, Pieter _________________________________________________________________ Shed those extra pounds with MSN and The Biggest Loser! http://biggestloser.msn.com/ ------------------------------ End of hollow-digest V10 #12 ****************************
