The phpBB is followed by those who are not only listeners of WXPN, but also the World Cafe hosted by Mr. David Dye. Mr. Dye started The World Cafe as a local show for 'XPN which was syndicated to individual Publics before it was picked up and made a member of the NPR.org stable of shows. As a consequence, the posters to the phpBB are from both coasts, Publics in-between, and Mr. Dye and his contemporaries. ***************************************************************************** ************************************************************************* Susan Werner @ Tin Angel Nov 4 with Trina Hamlin: A Reviewby jtd7 on Wed Nov 07, 2007 Susan Werner performed two shows at the Tin Angel Sunday night as part of their "Fifteenth Anniversary" series. She was joined by the exquisite Trina Hamlin. We heard the early show at 6:30, "the brunch show" Susan called it. Setlist: Why Is Your Heaven So Small? I Will Have My Portion Our Father, The New Revised Edition Forgiveness Sunday Morning Probably Not Did Trouble Me Time Between Trains Standing In My Own Way Barbed-Wire Boys St Mary's of Regret I'm In Debt Trina Hamlin solo: Down In The Hollow (Lonely Road) Stay On Your Side Of Town Give Me Chicago I Can't Be New ---- encore ---- Don't Get Me Wrong The set began with songs from her 2007 album "The Gospel Truth," songs that explore faith and doubt at once. Hearing them live again confirmed my initial opinion that these are among her strongest songs. Her performances have only deepened as she has toured the songs this year. Susan has elaborated the guitar part on Why Is Your Heaven So Small?, adding lots of blues licks. Even without the Wilmington-Chester Mass Choir, the ballad Forgiveness is breathtaking. Susan then moved into "the secular decadent songs for which I am better known," and which I continue to love. I'm In Debt is a new comic song, along the lines of Big Car or Rubber Glove Blues. She closed the show with a tongue-in-cheek (I think) cover of The Pretenders' Don't Get Me Wrong, performed in a cocktail piano GB style. She Who Must Be Obeyed said she'd like to hear Precious performed that way.Susan Werner has performed another great service this year in introducing me to the music of Trina Hamlin. This is the third time I have heard Trina Hamlin accompany Susan, and now I'm sure it's no fluke: She is a total musician, fluent on piano, guitar, harmonica, and a variety of percussion instruments. She has an engaging stage personality, with a warm and genuine sense of humor. And her voice paints with so many colors, from an angelic soprano to a bluesy yowl. She performed one of her own songs, Down In the Hollow, a "cri de couer," accompanying herself with a harmonica in one hand and a tambourine in the other. It was tremendous. You should do yourself a favor and go hear her next chance you get. Trina Hamlin returns to the Tin Angel on Dec 14, opening for The Nields. ***************************************************************************** ***************************************************************************** ** I do remember quite well the first time I heard you sing Down in the Hollow. You were doing a show with Tracy and Jayne at the Crush. You stood up and after a short song intro., you sang. I listen and you had my attention. The next night, at Peach's Grill, the same trio and same format, and again you rose to sing the song. This time, I was your newest fan I hope soon to be in back, listening contently, as you sing it again, Pieter _________________________________________________________________ Boo!
