(Oops, she fell. Don't worry; she's covered by a good health insurance policy.) I believe it was October 1996 when I saw Trina at the Baggot Inn (recently renamed from Sun Mountain Café that August). There was a cover charge of $5. Toward the end of her set, someone was starting to pass the Tip Pitcher around when Trina mentioned that it probably wouldn't be fair since there was already a charge at the door, but if anyone had a token, she could use it. Since I commute on the NYC Subways and Buses just about every day, I had quite a few I could spare, so I spared one. When Trina got the pitcher back, she gave a little laugh while saying "Somebody gave a token." It wasn't until I saw her the next time, at The Fort (Sidewalk Café), when I told her that I was the one who did it. And so, for the next several months, whenever I would go see her, I would leave a token or two (or three) in lieu of hard cash for my tip, even at times when no tip jar was passed. If there was no tip jar, I would place a token on the stool she used while she was performing or where she had her harps or her "orthodontic" harmonica holder while she was off greeting her many fans or putting away her gear. Then, in May 1997, around Memorial Day, after all the NYC Subway stations had converted turnstiles to accept MetroCard, I bought a prepackaged $15 MetroCard not for my own use, but to give to Trina as my last official act as Token Guy. Then, to my dismay, I found out that I wouldn't be able to see her perform live until July (I guess she took a well-deserved vacation). So it was toward the end of July 1997, at Rising Café, in the time between her two sets, when I presented her with the MetroCard. When Michelle passed the tip basket, I contributed actual coins this time. So much for being different! Have a sweet Saint Valentine's Day and an unimpeachably happy Presidents' Day!
