Well, it was empty except for an apparently untouched glass of water. Trina noted the glass and asked me who's it was. I told her I didn't know. She mentioned that she might take it, but I advised against it. When she asked why, I gestured as if I was dropping a vial of something into it. She said something to the effect of nah, this is New York, so I said something like so...it could happen here, too. She had placed a DAT recorder on the table and had set it to run. Shortly afterward, I noticed that the low battery indicator was on. After she finished her set, she went to turn it off, and I pointed sharply to the display. The next time I saw her was at the Sun Mountain Café. I asked her, "Does your DAT have good batts?" I don't think she understood what I said or meant, so I tried to rephrase it, but then I think I dropped the question and just gave her a more normal greeting. There were two songs that made a strongly positive impression on me that first time, "A Thought", and "Down to the Hollow". Seeing Trina juggle guitar and harmonica for "A Thought", and hearing her strong vocals throughout her set, but especially for "Down to the Hollow", were the most important reasons why I thought that I should be a returning member of her audience. Happy New Year (and last day of Kwanzaa)!
