Ok headliners, I'm sending out the call I need your help. I am taking a class called Impact of the Press on the Music Business. For our midterm we have to choose one author and write about one aspect of their music. I chose Emm Gryner. I was going to write about how her Filipino? Irish heritage has influenced her lyrically/ musically but that was too borad. Here is my new revised (for about the 35 th time) thesis: Emm Gryner uses her position as an independent artist to create lyrics that crtiziciz the mainstream music industry. here's the problem: I do onot know if I have enough content lyrically, i know some songs where she sings about the business such as Phonecall45, and Hook Machine Am I missing anything??? How can I add to this? If this does not work does anyone have any suggestions on another thesis ( it has to be VERY narrow) let me know if ya can help thanks for reading and happy listening! I guess the biggest problem I see is that those songs were on an album released by Mercury Records, which can hardly be considered independent (she was dropped when Polygram and Universal merged, relegating Mercury to an imprint under Island Def Jam). Suggestions I can offer (but may not be right) include: Emm Gryner proves that independent musicians can flourish without the backing of a major label. (You can talk about Dead Daisy records, Emm's success as an indie, positive press she gets, etc.) - maybe too broad Emm Gryner uses similar phrases and common words throughout many of her lyrics (maybe you can draw some conclusion?). Emm Gryner uses metaphors and obtuse references extensively in her lyrics [to obfuscate|distance herself|get her point across]. (You can pick one or make up your own.) Emm Gryner is an indie musician who embraces her ethnic background while appealing to a larger audience. (if too broad, rewrite to focus on a specific song or album or whatever...For example, explain how Songs of Love and Death allowed Emm to explore her Irish heritage). I dunno. I hope this helps.
