Drive By Truckers - The Dirty South I wasn't expecting anyone to beat out Sarah Harmer for my top spot, but then along came DBT. Even if you've never bought a southern rock album in your life, you should buy this one, the songwriting (both musically and lyrically) is THAT good...head and shoulders above everything else I heard this year. 2. Sarah Harmer - All Of Our Names I had huge expectations for this album, and it didn't disappoint...another brilliant record from my all-time favourite songwriter. 3. Stars - Set Yourself On Fire I thought they would have a hard time topping the incredible Heart, but they did it...take the best songs on Heart, and imagine an album where pretty much every single song is that good. 4. Tegan & Sara - So Jealous I'm still not a big fan of Tegan & Sara's older stuff, but over their last two albums they've turned into one of my absolute favourite Canadian acts, and I think this is easily their best record yet. 5. Courtney Love - America's Sweetheart This album got overshadowed by all of Courtney's "extracurricular activities" (if I didn't know better, I could swear I'm the only person who actually bought it), which is a real shame, because I think it's excellent, sort of a cross between Live Through This and Celebrity Skin. She may never make another record, but I'm still pulling for her, at least. 6. Kanye West - The College Dropout What a concept, a commercial rap record that's actually a fantastic album from beginning to end, rather than a couple of singles surrounded with filler...by far my favourite hip-hop album of the year, mainstream or otherwise. 7. Sahara Hotnights - Kiss & Tell My "turn it up loud and drive fast" album of the year. They seem to get more attention for their singer dating one of the Hives, but this completely blows the new Hives album away, they take the usual garage-rock formula and add an awesome pop/new-wave twist to it. 8. Butterfly Boucher - Flutterby I'd never even heard of her before the Sarah Mclachlan show, but I bought the album the next day and listened to it non-stop for a good two weeks straight...if I had to name the one song I listened to more than any other this year, "Another White Dash" would probably be it. 9. The Donnas - Gold Medal This makes four Donnas albums in a row that have made my yearly best-of list...what can I say, I'm hopeless! :) Sure, they're still basically happy to be the female answer to AC/DC, but they're just so incredibly good at it, I can't resist. 10. The Cure - The Cure I didn't seriously get into the Cure until about a year and a half ago, but now that I have, I'm completely hooked...I was a little worried about what Ross Robinson might do to this album, but it turned out to be their best in quite a while. ****************************************************************** Mike Keast (mikekeast@email.com) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Dec 2004 15:22:52 -0800 (PST) From: Im sick Subject: top ten actually, I think someone beat you to it, Michael (dec 14, 2004), but all is good http://www.smoe.org/lists/headline-girl/v07.n073 Yahoo!
