Honest!: http://smirky.com/ Is there anyone out there cause it's getting harder and harder to smirk... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 23:23:02 +0800 From: "Michael Keast" Subject: NEC: top 15 CDs of 2003 With all the music I bought this year I couldn't limit myself to only 10 CDs, so here's my top 15 instead. Warning, this is kind of long...I haven't posted in ages, so I guess I'm making up for lost time! 1. Rancid - Indestructible They took some criticism for signing a major label distribution deal (not to mention writing songs for Pink), but in my books they're still the best punk band in the world. 2. Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism I thought there was no way DCFC could top The Photo Album...luckily, they proved me wrong! 3. The Cardigans - Long Gone Before Daylight Quite possibly their best album yet, and that's saying something...Nina's voice still knocks me out every time I hear it. 4. Gang Starr - The Ownerz A major bright spot in an otherwise lackluster year for hip-hop. 5. Stars - Heart Broken Social Scene seem to get most of the hype when it comes to the "Canadian indie rock invasion", but I'll take Stars over BSS any day..."Elevator Love Letter" gets my vote for song of the year. 6. Rise Against - Revolutions Per Minute Giving Rancid a serious run for their money in the race for best punk band...and they get bonus points for the awesome hidden cover of Journey's "Any Way You Want It" :) 7. The Appleseed Cast - Two Conversations One of the most criminally under-appreciated bands out there...fans of highly melodic indie pop (think DCFC) are strongly urged to pick this up. 8. Scout - This Soft Life I first heard Scout on an episode of The Sopranos, of all places, and they've become one of my favourite bands...Ashen Keilyn's voice just gives me shivers. 9. Zwan - Mary Star of the Sea Some people complained that this just sounded like another Smashing Pumpkins album...and this is supposed to be a bad thing? :) It may just be a Billy Corgan solo album in disguise, but it was still a godsend for those of us who were mourning the breakup of the Pumpkins. 10. The Weekend - Kiss Kiss/Teaser + Bonus Level Basically two slightly different versions of the same album (each one has four songs that aren't on the other). Crunchy, infectious guitar pop in the vein of Letters To Cleo/That Dog...and if ever a band was born to cover "Workin' For The Weekend", The Weekend are it! 11. Metric - Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? One of my biggest pleasant surprises of the year...I picked this CD up without having heard a note of it, and it turned out to be incredible...I love it when that happens! 12. The Darkness - Permission To Land Air guitar album of the year...I heard a great quote from the Darkness' lead singer: "I don't believe that sublime and ridiculous have to be mutually exclusive"...couldn't have said it better myself! :) 13. The Postal Service - Give Up Further proof of Ben Gibbard's incredible talent...he's second only to Sarah Harmer on my list of favourite songwriters. 14. Diverse - One A.M. Another pleasant surprise...by far my favourite underground hip-hop record of the year 15. Explosions In The Sky - The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place Hopefully people who missed out on EITS' amazing debut will pick up on them with this album...atmospheric, instrumental guitar rock (or "post-rock", whatever that means) at its finest...best appreciated through a good pair of headphones! ********************************************************************* Mike Keast (mikekeast@email.com) - -- ___________________________________________________________ Sign-up for Ads Free at Mail.com http://promo.mail.com/adsfreejump.htm ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 10:34:35 -0500 From: "Stephanie Smith" Subject: Re: Song in Mona Lisa Smile I saw a preview for Mona Lisa Smile this morning on TV and it had Avril Lavigne's "Things I'll Never Say" playing, which has a "la da da la da da" thing going on, if that might be the song you want? Entirely possible, as I haven't seen the preview on tv. The one that's on the Sony website and that I've seen in theaters has the Cranberries in it. Maybe someone told them that playing "Dreams" during the preview isn't much different than saying "best movie of the year:" it's not original, and everyone does it.
