By no means is she new to the music industry, but she's relatively unknown to most of the US audience. If you don't mind music in a foreign language, you'll be impressed by her vocal talent. Hikaru Utada is a 20-year old singer/songwriter from NYC. She apparently spent half her time in New York and the rest in Tokyo. Here, she released an album under the name Cubic U when she was 14 (I believe). In Japan, she has released four albums under her own name, all of them selling chart toppers. Her first album, released in 1999, sold 9.5 million copies, if that gives you any idea of her popularity. Because of her age and success, she has been compared to Britany Spears, but since she writes the lyrics and music to most (if not all) of her songs, I don't think it's a fair comparison. Hikaru sings in Japanese, but as is the custom in pop music over there, her songs are littered with snippets of English (very well pronounced English, too). I discovered Hikaru through a performance she did for MTV Unplugged back in 2001. No, not the US Unplugged, but the Japanese. It's well worth the trouble to download if you go to http://www.torrentse.cx, seach on her name, and download the file (huge). You'll need to have the bittorrent client installed. I just downloaded it on a whim since it said "unplugged" and I was wowed by her. I hope her albums compare to this performance. Her official website is at www.toshiba-emi.co.jp/hikki/ . Apparently, she is also signed to EMI here in the US and has plans to release an English album here (though I have no idea when). If anyone is interested, I can see about posting an MP3 or two online for people to download to hear her - I'm unsure as to what resources are available online as far as music clips, though I know her official site has some. If you're looking for something new and different, I suggest you give Hikaru a chance and see what you think. She also has a song on the Rush Hour 2 Soundtrack with Lil Kim, 'Blow My Whistle.' I want to check out that unplugged link you passed on when I have free time. I've got a DVD concert of hers, 'Bohemian Summer 2000.' Definitely worth checking out! Cheers & Good Times! RON! The page is at http://www.thegreg.com/hikki. Personally, my favorites are First Love, Addicted to You, Kettobase!, and Final Distance. Try those first.
