Part if the awareness is the change in technology - the Net has introduced more people to the talent we have here and the Net has made it possible for Indie artists to get their stuff out there. I also think that some listeners are looking for more "intelligent" music and are finding it in Indie artists, many of whom just happen to be Canadian. Whatever the reason(s), it's great to see so many Canucks (Indie or otherwise) getting some well-deserved recognition. I think it's always been there but the non-Canucks have finally sat up and taken notice...finally. I >tend to agree more with those quoted in the article rather than Emm, what >do you guys think? I think I'd have to agree with Emm on this one. I don't think the "Canadian Invasion" is a new phenomenon. Celine Dion, Diana Krall, Sarah McLachlan, Barenaked Ladies, Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Shania Twain, Rush, etc. have all made their mark on the international music stage in the last thirty years. The "British Invasion" in the 60s was a time in which British acts dominated the pop music charts. Not just one or two musicians, but a whole plethora of them. In effect, they made the US music scene a mirror of the British music scene, and significantly altered the direction of popular music. Whether or not that is a characteristic that can be applied to the current crop of Canadian musicians remains to be seen, though I doubt not. I think Canadian musicians are benefiting from a variety of factors that make them play well in the US and abroad: - - The Canadian music industry is very much in tune with the US, as the habits and trends of US music easily reach across the border. - - Canadian musicians (if they make it to a certain level) are guaranteed some amount of exposure due to the "Canadian content" rules - - The Canadian music market is somewhat simpler than the US market, with a relative handful of major population centers. It is that much easier to create a buzz and generate interest. Contrast that with the US, with dozens of population centers, and each one has it's own unique challenges. Breaking onto the national scene is more difficult. - - In general, I think the Canadian industry is more focused on musicianship, while the current US market is focused on marketability and popularity. To my knowledge, there is no uniquely Canadian major label (maybe Nettwerk). People get known mostly because of their ability, then the marketing follows. There seems to be more of an investment in artists than the throw-away short-term nature of the US majors. Right now in the US, very few labels are willing to build an artist. They sign someone, aggressively push the music, and then if the public doesn't buy, you're outta there. Anyway, I don't think it's a "Canadian invasion." For many reasons, the music industry in the US never has relied on the nationality of the artist. If there is an invasion underway, it's not something the American public at large is aware of nor cares about. And that I think, is probably the most important argument against it. So, I was watching the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays play ball last night on ESPN, and I could almost swear that Geddy Lee was sitting behind home plate. Did anybody else see this? Well, he is a baseball fan... though this smells of an April Fools Day joke, if so, at least its being perpetrated on www.geddylee.net as well :-) http://www.geddylee.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=006095 They seem to think its Geddy. Hope you like her! take care! ~nicole Well, I just so happen to be Andrea's temporary manager/publicist (heh), so I can vouch for Nicole on this one. :) Her new album is finally done after 3 long years of hard work, and it is really lovely. I think a lot of folks on the Slean and Emm lists will enjoy it... John Switzer, who produced several of Jane Siberry's classic albums, was behind the boards, and has underscored Andrea's pristine vocals with some really interesting sounds. I think the record is a real step up for her, definitely moving forward from the more acoustic/folk-oriented sound of her first four albums. There's a track on the new record that's almost ambient pop-sounding ("Still Standing"). Very cool. :) Anyhow, I hope everyone in and around the Toronto area will come check out her CD release party at Hugh's Room April 26th. Aside from being an early birthday celebration for yours truly (heh), the album will be available for the very first time at the show. For those of you who can't make it to the concert, the record will be available via Andrea's website (andreaflorian.com), MapleMusic.com, and CDBaby beginning the end of April. If anyone wants any more info about the record, the show, or Andrea's music itself, feel free to give me a shout.
