It was fab to see them AND Broken Social Scene on the same night! I think right now, I can relate most to the song "Life Effects". __________________________________________________________ Get your FREE personalized e-mail at http://www.canada.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2003 07:10:00 +0000 From: "Catherine ." Sunday I was in Cleveland to see Sigur Ros, and last night I was in Toronto to see Emm, Holly, and Dayna. Both shows were a great time. I took a friend of mine from Buffalo with me to the show last night. It was his first Emm show and he was blown away. I think we have a "superfan" in the making. One of his many comments of the night came just after Emm and the boys finished playing..."How is it that she is not huge in the States?!" Keep safe, Dave Yahoo! You're right, that's an excellent idea. So, to follow up on my rave review of Stars: I guess I'd call them "soft pop", they're pretty mellow, with sort of breathy vocals and lots of gorgeous melodies. I've heard them compared to other Canadian indie pop bands like Broken Social Scene and the Dears (I actually like "Heart" better than the Broken Social Scene album, even though BSS seems to be getting more hype). They also remind me a little of The Postal Service, the side project from Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard (whose album is also really good, BTW). Hope that clears things up a bit! ********************************* Mike Keast (mikekeast@email.com) - -- _______________________________________________ Sign-up for your own FREE Personalized E-mail at Mail.com http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2003 21:30:24 +0000 From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: Re: (OAC) Stars Michael (he of the impeccable musical taste ;)) wrote: >I haven't posted in ages, but I had to come out of lurk mode because I > >think I've just heard the album of the year...let me just say that > >everyone needs to go buy Stars' new album "Heart" right now. Trust me, just go buy it! :) I've been raving about this record to whomever will listen (and more often than not, even if they *aren't* listening! ;P), for the last four months. I always thought they were a great band, but this record is really their tour-de-force. Simply brilliant. Definitely going to be hard to beat for record of the year. As to what kind of music they play, uh, they've moved away from a more British electro-pop sound reminiscent of the Smiths and St. Etienne to more of a symphonic, elegant pop sound with boy-girl vocals. Listen here (the first two tracks are off their 2001 'Comeback' EP, the rest of the tracks are from the new 'Heart' album: http://www.newmusiccanada.com/genres/artist.cfm?Band_Id=6298 Cheers, - - Tab. _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ End of headline-girl-digest V6 #59 **********************************
