Factor in the All-Star backing band of Jim Creegan (Barenaked Ladies), Don Kerr (Rheostatics), and longtime sidekick Tony Scherr, and the closing jam session with pals Sarah Harmer and Luther Wright, and it made for a joyous display of music and community. I didn't stop smiling for a week. Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions - Lee's Palace (Toronto), Aug.21 When the reclusive former lead singer of cult faves Mazzy Star released her dreamy solo album last year, devotees cheered. And then when they heard that the notoriously stage-shy Sandoval was actually going on tour, they nearly fainted from excitement. Luckily, most of her legion of local fans seemed to get it together in time to show up to Lee's Palace to gather at the feet of the shoegazer dream girl. Mazzy's odd mix of atmospheric guitars and ethereal vocals seemed to have cut a wide swath, judging by the elbow-to-elbow proximity of nerdy indie-rock geeks and surly Goth types. All I wanted - along with everyone else in the room - was to get a glimpse of the sprite herself. So of course it was fitting that she and her band performed in total darkness, nary a spotlight shining down on the tiny shadowy figure whispering into the mic. Guitars swirled, xylophones plinked, and it all sounded exactly like the album. She said but two (largely inaudible) words to the audience over the entire hour and then disappeared into the ether. Sigh. Like a sweet, heady, hazy dream. Sarah Slean - Trinity-St. Paul Centre (Toronto), April 27 Her first 'official' hometown show following the release of her major-label debut meant that most local fans hadn't seen her play in half a year - and anyone who knows anything about Slean knows that she progresses musically more in a month than most artists do in a year. So the crowd stuffed into the pews in the stately old church were about to be pleasantly surprised. Like a butterfly coming out of its chrysalis, Slean burst onto the stage with a fire and showmanship that hadn't been seen before. She led the cream of the crop of local players through a madcap cabaret show, giving new life to her already magnificent songs and serving notice that she was more than ready to play in the big leagues. Astounding, even to those of us who have been following her since the very beginning. Hillside Festival - Guelph Lake Island, July 28-30 Still the best, most eclectic, diverse, and musically adventurous festival on the planet. Even though I missed all the big guns (K-OS, Hayden), there was still plenty to please the ears that sweltering weekend, including the always amusing American singer-songwriter Susan Werner, Tamara Williamson serenading a tentful of sunburned folks in her ambient Microbunny sideproject, and By Divine Right's hippie rock revival closing out Saturday night. This year is Hillside's 20th anniversary, and it's bound to be a doozy - I wouldn't miss it for the world. Aimee Mann - Palais Royale, November 8 The Palais Royale, a renovated historic dancehall, is a lovely building, but a really hard room to play - it's cold as hell (both literally and figuratively) when it's not totally full. So it was great to see the place packed to the rafters for Mann's concert, and she harnessed that energy to deliver one of the tightest shows of the year. Much of the credit for that goes to her fanastic backing band, who sounded like they'd played together all their lives, but Mann herself was in an unusually good mood (maybe it was her pre-show dinner with local comic artist Seth?), bantering with the crowd, even taking the "Freebird!" requests in stride. Maybe I just enjoyed seeing her smile for once, but I came away from the show with a newfound appreciation for Mann and her recent "Lost in Space" album. - - Tab. _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM: Try the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 01:00:32 GMT From: idh12volt@juno.com Subject: Re:Re: Emm radio news I hear ya!!
