Steph actually got her replacement copy already though and that DID come in one piece. As for Top 10 lists, I am also one of those people who bought suprisingly few CDs this year (I'm usually a complete junkie, but I showed SOME restraint this year) -- of the ones I've heard, here is my Top 10 (in no particular order) -- by the way, like Attila, I find it strange that Coldplay was conspicuously absent from many Top 10 lists, because I thought the new disc was absolutely brilliant (although it did show up in a couple): 1. Emm Gryner - Asianblue 2. Jason Mraz - Waiting for my Rocket to come 3. Chantal Kreviazuk - What if it all means something 4. Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head 5. Sarah Slean - Nightbugs 6. Ben Kweller - Sha Sha 7. Abandoned Pools - Humanistic 8. Our Lady Peace - Gravity 9. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 10. Beulah - The Coast is Never Clear (actually 2001, but I discovered them this year) Honorable mentions: Phantom Planet - The Guest, Weezer - Maladroit, Alice Peacock - self-titled, Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk, Elbow - Asleep in the Back, Ryan Adams - Demolition, David Gray - New Day at Midnight, John Mayer - Room for Squares (was in my Top 10 at one point (in VERY heavy rotation), but I'm so sick of it now, it has fallen out), Bright Eyes - Lifted OR the Story is in the soil keep your ear to the ground, Gomez - In our gun, Ari Hest - Story after Story, Matt Nathanson - When everything meant everything (EP) Artists formerly in heavy rotation whose CDs I did not pick up this year because I'm poor and had to make choices, but if I had more money, I would check their newest CDs out, and some would probably be in my Top 10 or 20 - Alanis Morrisette - Under Rug Swept, Counting Crows - Hard Candy, Patti Griffin - 1000 kisses, Beth Orton - Daybreaker, Fisher - Uppers/Downers, Ani DiFranco - Both her CDs this year, Bic Runga - Beautiful Collison, Duncan Sheik - Daylight Artists I didn't realize had new CDs until i saw all your Top 10 lists, but now I NEED to check out - Starling, J Mascis & the Fog, Tegan & Sara, Death Cab for Cutie (How in the HELL did I miss this one????) Artists (mostly new, some old) who I downloaded tracks from this year and now need to go check out their full CDs and find out more about them -- OK Go - self titled, Yeah Yeah Yeahs - EP, Sleater-Kinney - One Beat, Thursday - Full Collapse, Something Corporate - Leaving through the window, Rubyhorse, Brad - Welcome to Discovery Park, Pedro the Lion - Control, Jets to Brazil - Perfecting Loneliness, Andy Stochansky - Five Star Motel, Kristin Hoffman - Divided Heart, Hot Hot Heat Okay, that's enough..... HOLY CRAP was this a good year for music..... I need to start making more money so I can afford all these CDs.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rob Tittel DreamsAwake Music NetRadio, CD and Concert Reviews, Booking, Promotion, Publicity, Photography, and more www.dreamsawake.com Click here to Listen to Jericho Two, indie-rock, folk, and 90's alternative internet radio www.dreamsawake.com/jericho2 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, December 04, 2002 10:18 AM Subject: Re: busted emm winter ep > Just curious > > > When please say Crumbled and flakey.... what exactly do they mean... Death Cab's new one, You Can Play These Songs With Chords, isn't really that new. It's a re-release of their 8-song cassette by the same name that Ben Gibbard sold out of his backpack way back when. They added 10 (!) rarities on this release, ranging from b-sides to ultra-limited 7 inches to songs from previous recording sessions that didn't make it on to the albums. It's a nice little package for fans and has some really cool tracks (Two Cars, State Street Residential, Prove My Hypotheses, etc.), but it's got its share of crap too (Hey Tomcat and a completely unnecessary version of Song for Kelly Huckaby being among them). On a related note, if you like DCFC, I would *highly* recommend the re-release of Ben Gibbard's solo self-titled effort under the name All-Time Quarterback. He takes lo-fi to a new level, playing DCFC-esque pop songs on broken casios and guitars that have only two strings. It's some really awesome stuff, and I'd rank it right up there with Asianblue and Night Bugs as one of my favourites of this really good year in music. That's a great way to put it Trish. I always thought that the readable part of a disc was in between the plastic. On the Ep it's part of the layer on top. Does anyone know if this is true for all cds? > In a message dated 12/4/2002 10:18:07 AM Eastern > Standard Time, rturingan@dico.com writes: > > > When please say Crumbled and flakey.... what > exactly do > > they mean... On commercially produced CDs, the recorded material is indeed housed between two layers of plastic. On CD-Rs, it varies. There is always a layer of plastic immediately followed by the recording layer. On cheaper discs, this is then covered by a thin layer which is also where the printed "label" resides. This layer can be very thin, which is why any scratches or writing with a ball point pen can ruin the disc. On higher quality discs, this layer is thicker to keep this from happening. Most of the CD-Rs people buy are the cheaper variety. The really good ones still run almost $1 a disc (or possibly more). When I got my copy of the EP, it was beginning to crack on the outer edge, so I waited until I got home to copy it on my computer. Then I put the original away and will never play it again for fear it will disintegrate. FYI - for those that care about such matters, better CD-Rs include the Mitsui's and the Taiyo Udens. Fuji's are also ok. Any disc that says "Made in Taiwan" (except the Fuji's) is made by Ritek, which is an inferior but cheap brand of discs (sold by Memorex, Imation, TDK, etc.). Personally, I'm using TDKs (Ritek make) discs for most of my everyday recordings (live shows and the like), and using high quality Mitsuis and TDKs (made by Taiyo Uden) for archive purposes.
