I'm not even a bio major. Blah! You know, Anna Waronker just played a few weeks ago here for Ladyfest. I've liked her for years but she could have rocked so much harder on that new album and if you've seen her live you know what I'm talking about. Azure Ray's new one is okay. Nothing can really surpass their EPs or even their split 7"s from a few years back. I like Ladytron's new one and it's up there with the other electro releases of the year (Stereo Total, Saint Etienne, Sing-Sing). Have only heard bits and pieces of the Doug Martsch - Rhett Miller stuff. It's 3am and I still have myelomas and monoclonal antibodies dancing around in my head so I'm not really certain of my favorites but here's what i do know: The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots . . . best album of the year Shivaree - Rough Dreams. . . amazing yetunderappreciated outside of europe even though being from cali George Harrison - Brainwashed. . . just bought it yesterday and it made me cry all day India Arie - Voyage To India. . . if this was released during a year where the lips were on hiatus this would be a top spot contender Sigur Ros - (). . . saw them a few weeks ago and it took me back to king crimson circa 1974 (and I wasn't even born yet) Beck - Sea Change. . . in my opinion, better than mutations simply because godrich is so controlled this time around Thievery Corporation - The Richest Man in Babylon. . . the best 3am driving album of the year Luna - Romantica. . . can't really explain how much i love this one Sahara Hotnights - Jennie Bomb. . . seeing them live helped get this on my list DJ Shadow - Private Press. . . amazingly i saw shadow more times than any other band on this list Rolling Stones - Forty Licks. . . not surprising: superb Rilo Kiley - The Execution of All Things. . . they keep getting better and better Some other stuff I liked this year: Cody Chestnutt, Mia Doi Todd, Bic Runga, Tom Brosseau, N.E.R.D. Some good EPs - Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Rooney, Longwave, The Like, Radio Vago, Sextional, Trembling Blue Stars, Mellowdrone, Charlotte Martin Biggest surprise: Christina Aguilera's "I'm Ok." This song is the best thing she has ever done. It doesn't even sound like her. Too bad she wastes her talent on the other 19 (!) tracks on the album. ~candace Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. An number of albums... ...2002 kicked ass...! 1. Aimee Mann - Lost In Space I'm not an Aimee Mann fan, but this is good stuff... 2. Alice Peacock - Alice Peacock Forget Train, forget Five For Fighting, forget John Mayer, forget Riddlin' Kids, forget Bleu... 3. Ari Hest - Story After Story Ari just gets better and better... and better... 4. Butch Walker - Left of Self-Centered Butch is a real, live ROCK STAR... 5. Chantal Kreviazuk - What If It All Means Something? Speaking of getting better and better and better... 6. David Gray - A New Day at Midnight If it's good enough for Coldplay, it's good enough for me... 9. Duncan Sheik/Spooky Ghost - Daylight/The Light Machine Duncan and Gerry Leonard's albums "Daylight" and "The Light Machine" respectively are truly works of art... I'm counting them as one because it's my list and I can, damn it... 10. Emm Gryner - Asianblue This album hasn't gotten under my skin yet, but an Emm Gryner album I don't love is still better than many albums I do... 11. Geoff Pearlman - Anything At All An as of yet undiscovered Los Angeles talent well worth checking out... 12. Graham Colton (Group) - Self-Titled? I love this band, er, group... 13. Jason Mraz - Waiting For My Rocket To Come This could be my favorite album of 2002... 14. Rhett Miller - The Instigator Elektra just keeps putting out great albums... 15. Anna Waronker's album is really good, it's fairly similar to her That Dog stuff, although a little more laid-back. I'd definitely recommend it...if you're a That Dog fan, you'll almost certainly like it. As many of you know, over the past year Emm has been working closely with a new up and coming singer songwriter from Winnipeg, Andrew Spice. This past summer, he opened for Emm at her CD release party at the Top of the Senator creating quite a stir with the crowd. I am please to announce that his debut CD, "Pretty Demons" will be released on Dead Daisy Records very shortly. So to celebrate the release, Andrew will be doing a special in-store performance at The Music Authority at 500 Church Street (between Carlton and Wellesley at Alexander) on Sunday December the 8th at 3pm. If you live in Toronto, and liked what you heard at Emm CD release party, you will not be disappointed by Andrew's cd, It's stunning. Be one of the first people to own this amazing disc. It would be awesome if you could come out to show your support. Cheers Rannie PS: Andrew will also be appearing at C'est What on Sunday night.
