The weather was perilous, the crowd was small (albeit enthusiastic) and the venue was quite possibly as gloomy as the weather (Burn the trailor park! Run!). And yet, Emm rose above it all and gave one of her better performances. She was animated, giddy and just terribly charming. The drive up to the Beachland Tavern was, well, Kafkaesque. The rain was pounding down, the large clouds formed hideous shapes as branches of lightning lit them up. A tornado warning was in effect for surrounding counties! Beachland... funny. I wouldn't say that the place was a dive, but the scary guy with the mullet at the bar eyeing me occassionally made me slightly uneasy. The barstools were held together with duct tape, the wood paneling's best days were in the dead and gone 1970s, and "eau de bowling alley" oozed from the water damaged ceiling. Emm came on in pigtails, black cargo pants, a black spaghetti strap top and her trusty rainbow-striped wristband. No keyboard, though, not even a Casio, so he setlist was all guitar. sort of human being-always one of my faves northern holiday-no Emm, honest, it's NOT a country song beautiful things-where clint on the soundboard was less than cooperative about LESS guitar this mad-which i've seen her do live about 8 times and EACH time she claims it's the maddest she's ever been hello aquarius-which i always pretend is directed towards me, even though if i listen closely to the lyrics i know that's a bad thing divine like you-which melted my kneecaps sunnify your rain-actually the song has no title yet, but this is the line around which the refrain is built. it's something new where she picked the guitar strings. good riddance-which i'd never heard live before summerlong-probably the first song of Emm's most of us ever heard. Artistic Aside: Emm waves hello from Cleveland - http://www.geocities.com/smirkypop/pigtails.jpg She was great, she really was, and this is usually where the review ends. BUT! After putting up with Genuine Son - a couple of Dave Matthews wannabes (oy! their lyrics were painful to listen to, which means they'll be really famous soon), then came on Ari Hest! (by the way, a word of advice to genuine son. when alanis says "wine me, dine me, 69 me, it sounds shocking and is coming from bitterness... when you boys sing "wine 'em, dine 'em, 69 'em, it sounds like crude frat boy humor-a good thing? i think no). ARI HEST! Go to arihest.com. Go now. He too played an acoustic set but his songs were complex and interesting and he played with soulful passion. He had four groupies in the front row all doe-eyed and giddy and hanging on his every bead of sweat. It was very cute. He has a new CD coming out very soon and I urge you go check out his site. anyway, sorry for the long post... me ===== I'm a famous artist. Honest!: http://smirky.com/ New Exhibit In Georgetown!
