If you'll point your browser to: http://chrw.usc.uwo.ca/mp3/1995/Music%20Industry%20Arts%20-%201995/mia3.htm you'll find a few tracks from back when Emm was at university. I think three of the tracks fail. On "Unforgiven," right click the link, select open in new window, and after it fails, change the link to read "Unforgiven" instead of just "Forgiven." (Caps might be important, too.) Trust me, you'll figure it out. I haven't worked out the other two, though I tried a few different options. And if anyone knows where I can get an original of this CD, contact me. Oh, and for those that are interested, I added some additional audio and video on my site (http://www.emmgryner.net). As I have time, I'm digging up some of the earlier recordings. As part of that program, there was (and maybe still is) a CD released each year, containing songs written, recorded and produced by the students. At the time, that was perhaps a more impressive achievement than it might be today, since do-it-yourself CD producion hadn't yet taken off in all its glory. Cheap computer multitrack recording software and CD burners started to make their impact a couple years later. Anyway, your link goes to the University of Western Ontario's radio station, CHRW. Different school, but the CD was of local interest, hence the reason it's featured on CHRW's web site. Your best chance of finding a real copy of the CD is to hit flea markets and dollar bins in the used CD stores around London. I found my copy for a buck in a Toronto used CD store in 1998, I think. Cool that songs these are available online though. Here's a article on the official site from Access magazine (Fall '99) that mentions it: http://www.emmgryner.com/emmxrev37.htm Whether it's autobiographical or not, I was listening to the song "Mary Jill" and started to think about the lyrics (surprisingly enough, not something I do too often). The point of view of the song is different than many of her other songs. I wondered who Mary Jill was, remembered some previous ponderings on what "Emm" stood for, and started trying to interpret the song as if she was writing about herself, and it pretty well fit. A quick Google search on Mary Gryner brought the CHRW link right away. (I think this all started several months ago when I was trying to find some reference to the MIA single online and kept coming up blanks. I knew it was recorded under her own name, but I had no idea what.) I figured I'd share since I've been looking for these songs, as I'm sure, have many others.
