I just discovered Emm plays *three* Bay Ares shows this week, although her site still lists (as of midnight) two this week. The extra show is Wednesday in Oakland. But it's really cool, because every situation is different. One will be like a big Filipino party, and the next will be like a big college thing.'' Gryner, 25, returns to the Bay Area next week for shows in San Jose and San Francisco as part of the Asian-American Songwriters Showcase. The house concert format has roots in folk, bluegrass and, of course, classical chamber music. It's unusual, though, for an alt-rock-influenced artist such as Gryner to perform in living rooms, but then much about Gryner's musical path is unusual. The daughter of a Filipino-Canadian mother and an Irish-German-Canadian father, she grew up in Forest, Ontario, population 2,800, and started studying piano at age 5, focusing on classical music until her early teens. ``There really wasn't necessarily a whole mess of culture in the country where I grew up,'' she says by phone from a tour stop in Toronto. ``But learning classical music was amazing, because that was such a huge foundation. And my dad is such a huge jazz fan; so against my and my two brothers' wills, he pumped jazz throughout the house and educated us.'' Toward the end of her teen years, Gryner became interested in writing and performing her own songs. At age 20 she moved to Toronto and found work as a musician. ``My mind was opened to different kinds of music, more underground kinds of music I wasn't able to tap into when I lived in Ontario,'' she says. A year later, she launched her own record label, Dead Daisy Records, and released her debut EP, ``Original Leap Year,'' a disc of covers. In 1998, she was signed to Mercury Records, which released her second album, ``Public,'' which spawned the hit single ``Summerlong.'' That year, she also took part in her first of three Lilith Fair tours. When several record labels under the Universal corporate umbrella were consolidated a year later and Mercury was absorbed into Island-Def Jam, Gryner left the label. She was then recruited by rock legend David Bowie to sing and play keyboard and recorder in his band, which kept her busy through the following year. Since leaving Mercury, Gryner has released four albums on Dead Daisy. Her latest CD, ``Asianblue,'' features the kinetic ``Beautiful Things,'' the hip-swaying ``Free'' and the drum-and-bass flavored ``Young Rebel,'' each of which showcases her exploration of rhythms. Like Lilith Fair alumna Sheryl Crow, Gryner now does her composing on bass guitar. ``There's always a danger when writing on piano that what you're writing will come out a little more mellow,'' she says. ``That's why I'm exploring other things, like writing starting with grooves with bass, which I've been playing for a while. It's kind of an odd place to start, but it's good just to change things up.'' RAINN, a nonprofit organization, operates America's only national hotline for victims of sexual assault and was named one of Americas top 100 charities by Worth Magazine. According to the US Department of Justices 2000 National Crime Victimization Survey, an individual is sexually assaulted every two minutes in America - thats 30 people an hour, 715 people a day. And while most rape victims are women, 1 in 10 victims are male, and 1 in 6 victims are children. The hotline (800.656.HOPE) offers free, confidential counseling and support 24 hours a day. Since its founding in 1994, RAINN has helped more than 425,000 victims of sexual assault. RAINN estimates that about 6,000 people a month call the RAINN hotline for help. As of March 1, 2001, RAINN has 889 rape crisis center affiliates across America. The hotline is funded entirely by individuals, corporations, and foundations and receives no government funding.
