I feel so dumb, everyones been telling me the song Christopher is about that astronaut guy. Forgive me; Im not very much in tune with the real world, so I have no idea. Well now, with all this new information, the We are just driving in cars... part makes much more sense to me, although I think my theory of the song was cooler though =] Ive noticed that my favorite songs are usually the ones Im trying to decipher or figure out something about it, and ever since these comments of Christopher and East Coast angel kept pooping up, those two have been my favorites, at least for now. I also really like Free. Symphonic is always good when I put it on, but I never seem to want to put on, strange. The only songs I seem to skip over the most and its not that I dont like them, I absolutely love every song on this album are Young Rebel, Siamese Star, and Divine Like You. I bet once I give them another few listens Im sure Ill fall in love with them all over again. I first heard many of these songs when I downloaded the bootleg concert versions of the songs (you can get them from www.emmgryner.net). I liked Northern Holiday the most out of all the bootlegs, but the album version is noticeably slower and therefore appealed to me a less. But I still like it, especially because if the lyrics (contrary to Danila); I really like so Im alone but at least Im free. Although, the lyrics in the last half of the song make absolutely no sense to me. I like Northern Holiday because the lyrics hit me kinda personally, and the same goes for many of the other songs. Many times have I said the things that are sang in Emms songs. Maybe thats why I like Emm so much; no other artist has made so much music that I can relate with, or at least I think that I can relate with because many of the songs Im not completely sure what theyre about, but whatever my guess is, is good enough for me. To Karmen: Although I do agree there is an excessive amount of blips and whirls in this album, thats just part of the charm of Asianblue. Whats wrong with a little variety, I like the all the bells, the whistles, and maximum poppiness of this album. - -Steve P.S.: sorry about the boxes all over my letters, it seems that my punctuation marks don't caryy over well. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 19:04:31 +0000 From: "Steve Luu" Subject: Re: Karmen To Karmen: Sorry I sounded defensive, I really didn't want to sound defensive, I wanted more to sound funny and quirky, but I wrote this in the dead of night so I guess my mind wasn't working that well. Maybe I should have elaborated more, but I was sleepy and since your part was the last section in my letter I had to cut it off a little short without a chance to make it amicable. I completely respect your opinion and mean no disrespect. As you say, everyone has their opinion. Oh and also, I'm sure people just don't like Emm for just for the sake of liking her, it might seem that way because... well... this IS an Emm Gryner mailing list. And just to add in (I guess I am getting a bit defensive), there are bunch of songs on Dead Relatives I don't care much for, and some on Girl Versions, but everything else is wonderful to me. Although, I like these unexpected changes in artists, it makes them seem more mysterious and unpredictable to a certain extent. Take Radiohead for example, their sudden change between Ok Computer and KidA was quite unexpected, but both albums are great (and I guess you're right, I am one for all those crazy electronic noises, I like Idiotech most on KidA). It's still no comparison to changes I've seen by other artist; the only one I can think of right now is the band called "The Good Life," I doubt anybody reading this has ever heard of them, they're an indie band on the Saddle Creek record label. The Good Life is a sideband from the singer from Cursive, but the first Good Life album sounded very much like Cursive, whereas the second album (or at least I think there's just two, correct me if I'm wrong, Novena on a Nocturn and Black Out) is completely techno-poppy and different. The techno rout seems to be popular these days, even when Marilyn Manson came out with Mechanical Animals. Or if anyone's ever heard of Bright Eyes (also a Saddle Creek band), their lead singer Conor Oberst (visit Conor at www.thestoryinthesoil.com, his music is really good) went from the soft, mellow, depressing, lovesick sound of Bright Eyes, to forming the angry, bitter, anti-corporate America, hard punk sideband dubbed Desaparecidos. Some of these changes can be very drastic at times, but I welcome these changes, not just because I like techno-poppiness or any other genre more, but because it gives artists a sort of mystique to them, so that when a new album comes out, you won't just go, "Oh its just another Radiohead," "just another Cursive," or "just another Science Fair." - -Steve P.S.: sorry if I write a lot, I just don't shut up =] _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jul 2002 00:32:55 +0000 From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: Re: (OAC) Tegan & Sara Hi, all... Andy had posted about Tegan & Sara's upcoming album... It's terrific, a bit of a departure from their last CD, as they've teamed up with the producers of Vancouver (they're based there now) pop-rock 'supergroup' the New Pornographers. So it's a much 'punkier', less 'folky' album, which won't surprise people that have been following them since their early beginnings (they started out playing grungy folk-punk tunes on electric guitar), but may take some getting used to for fans of the two-chicks-with-acoustic-guitars thing. It's a really fun album, though, lots of hooky melodies... It could do really well at radio if their label is really willing to work it (which, IMO, they didn't do at all with the last album). And for those who were wondering whatever happened to those CD release dates in Toronto, NYC, and Vancouver that were up on T&S's website, they've been postponed but *will* happen at a later date, with the exception of NYC, as there's already an upcoming (full-band) date scheduled for September. - - Tab :) _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 21:27:40 -0400 From: "beachbum13" Subject: What am I missing???? I'm de-lurking here because I just got Emm's new CD and I'm baffled even more now than in the past! I listen to a lot of music and TOO MUCH RADIO (at work) and almost every song on this CD blows away the crap I'm forced to endure! Her music is so good and this CD has blown me away! I can't believe that there's no record company that could turn her into a superstar? Maybe she's just too talented and too beautiful! That being said it's to her fans benefit because we get to see her in great venues like "The Point" in Philly next month. I can't wait!!!! Anyone else going to be there??? Back to lurking... PS - I have photos on my web site from her last show at the Point. http://lbigetwet.com/music/music.html beachbum13 Emm Gryner @ Yahoo!
