["Andrea Chiu" ] Re: Christopher and East Coast Angel ["asherev" Subject: Christopher and East Coast Angel I received the album a few days ago, and so far I must have heard like 20 times, and I love it. Although, the albums a bit short; I expected it to have 12 songs just like her other albums containing her own material (although, some may argue that Dead Relatives only has 11 tracks, but the last track has 2 songs on it). I think every song on this album is just wonderful, but I can see why people have their beef with some of the songs. For example, Christopher, many people seem to dislike this song, and I think its because of the crazy echoes (but I like the echoes) and bad rhyme at the end; We are just driving in cars what the hell is that?!? Youre all crazy, I like this song, probably because I think that I can relate to it; I too have driven really really fast, trying to fill my empty heart, but unlike Christopher, Im not dead and walking on the dark. At least thats what I think that song is about; a lot of Emms songs can be kinda cryptic (if you can tell me what the hell shes talking about in Julia, call up the CIA, they might have a job for you). Another song people seem to dislike is East Coast Angel, and I think its because, for one, the drumbeat in the background is a little slow, and can make for a dulling effect on the listener. Another reason might be that the chorus rhymes weird; the rhyming words are very close together and that might sound awkward to some people. But aside from those issues, and they dont bother me any, the song has some of most beautiful lyrics Ive ever heard. Ive learned to not only appreciate Emms songs just for her great sound and lyrics, but for the message behind the lyrics. All of her songs, if taken the time to really listen to and dissect the lyrics and metaphors, youll find great stories and messages behind them, and thats why I think this album is so great, every song, especially Christopher and East Coast Angel; when I first listened to the album, I too agreed that those two songs were bit iffy, but after listening to them few more times, and realizing the great stories behind them, I absolutely fell in love with them. The same can be said for all her other songs and albums, theres always a couple songs that take a little more listening to, in order to really get into them. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Jul 2002 04:43:43 -0400 From: "celestial faerie" Subject: asianblue in metro hey, i dont know if anyone has posted about this already...but there was a brief cd review of asianblue in toronto's free "metro" newspaper that is given out in the subways today. it basically said it was a good, catchy pop cd, great lyrics, etc. got a 3/5 stars total. kinda cool to see emm in a paper like that, which normally only mentions "big name pop stars" and shit. kristin _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Jul 2002 12:10:46 -0400 From: "Andrea Chiu" Subject: So...you like...(Tegan and Sara) stuff...? "Her last album, Girl Versions, offered revelatory covers of Def Leppard, Fugazi, the Clash, and Thrush Hermit. Now, Emm Gryner's third studio disc places the Ontario songwriter (and former Bowie backup singer) at the forefront of Canadian pop with melodies Sheryl Crow would trade her Rolodex for. Passionate and scarily catchy." - Shawn Conner __________________________________________________________ Get your FREE personalized e-mail at http://www.canada.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Jul 2002 12:33:16 -0700 From: "asherev" Subject: Re: Christopher and East Coast Angel Hi, I really agree with everything Steve said. A lot emm's songs take some time to really settle in. I think because the sings are so emotinal and catchy at the same time, it's only the second or third listen that makes you realize what it's really trying to convey. I loved east coast angel when i first heard it, but thought christopher(which is about canadian astronaut chris hatfield), was a bit to drawn out. However, now i love it because of the beautiful metaphors in it. So, in short i love what you said about letting the music sink in a lttle more.
