Hopefully in May, we will see music played >there again. The situation is still touch-and-go, as the co-owners/developers of the Gladstone are in somewhat of a snit following miscommunication during this recent insurance problem... The developer who bought the hotel 2 years ago, Michael Tippin, is known for buying and restoring old heritage buildings (and is known to be quite sensitive and has a good rep for actually maintaining old features of these buildings without completely gentrifying them), so when I was at NOW mag the summer before last, I wrote an article about how he was promising that the Gladstone would maintain most of its quirky charm despite the overhaul. Well, that 'quirky charm' he spoke about may or may not include the longtime residents of the hotel - the battered old relic is one of the only places left that will rent out a room to these people, who really couldn't afford anything else. Now that the insurance problem has been worked out, it remains to be seen what will happen to the hotel and the residents themselves when renovations begin, and prices skyrocket after it's over. ANYway, real estate lesson aside ;), my point is that I'm guessing that we should enjoy the Art Bar while we can when and if it reopens. (BTW, for anyone who hasn't been, it's a very romantic space - tiny, dark, and mysterious. :)) >Has anyone gone to see any shows at Revival on College? As >big as >Lee's but more narrow, than wide. It's more of an upscale 'club' rather than the typical music venue, but they have made more of a commitment to live music following the success of their soul/urban music nights. They started with weekly residencies, then added more nights, and have now branched out to other types of music, because it's a beautiful space, and more artists have requested to play there (although if it's not urban music, it's still used mostly only for CD releases and the like, 'big' shows, so to speak). For those of you that have seen that (ubiquitous) Remy Shand video, the club looks very much like the club in that video (although I don't *think* it's actually Revival in the video). >There is also the new space at the Hard Rock Cafe... Club 279 which >is quite a nice space. I saw Vyletz playing there on Wednesday night >and >it was such a classy space. Quite large. It is a big space, very new, very sleek, but it's a little too 'suburban dance club' for me ;) - as in, a little too over-the-top, trying too hard to please. I'm sure it packs in the Hard Rock tourists, though, and it is excellent to have a live music venue smack-dab in the middle of downtown. Ivana Santilli is scheduled to play there in mid-April, actually, which will be nice... >Hugh's Room is also an amazing space, too bad it is so far from the > >downtown core. Quite far, but a lovely, warm room with excellent folk-music bookings. It is strictly a folk club, though, which, judging by its solid business, was sorely needed, but that doesn't really begin to plug the hole of decent small-to-mid-sized venues in Toronto. >Re: Martina Sorbara CD re-release > >There is no information on the Nettwerk site , however there is an > >extremely small version of one of my photos on the site (to my > >surprise). I'm not sure if it's going to end up being 5 tracks on the final CD, but I've heard 2 of the new tracks, and they're very much in the vein of the rest of the album tracks. Which is to say, if you liked those, then you'll like these. Her singing and playing have definitely strengthened from being on the road a lot in the past several months. - - Tab :) _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Mar 2002 06:30:06 From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: Re: Julie Doiron Erin wrote: >I'm just jumping out of the shadows to ask a little question. Well, I interviewed her back in December, and never having spoken to her before, her speaking voice reminded me very much of Leslie Feist's. Their singing is *somewhat* similiar as well, very sweet and wispy, but I wouldn't really say that they sound all that similar, musically speaking. Julie is much more lo-fi and stripped down, where Feist is much more melodic. Although that may change with Leslie's next album - I can see it being very low-key, lo-fi. James wrote: >She used to be with Eric's Trip and then on her own as Broken Girl, I >recall her doing some stuff with Elevator/Elevator to Hell and >Moonsocket. Eric's Trip, of course, being those seminal East Coast indie rockers who recently reunited for a few shows... After frontduo Julie and Rick broke up in the mid-90s, Julie got married to a photographer and Rick married artist/musician Tara, and that duo's new post-Eric's Trip band is Elevator (formerly known as Elevator to Hell). There's yer history lesson for anyone interested in checking out early Doiron material. ;) Those of you who were/are fans of Eric's Trip, by the way, there'd been some talk of the band getting together for more shows and/or to record following the success of the reunion shows, but Julie's having a baby this summer and will be taking a good several months off following this month's release of her new "Heart and Crime" album. ET *may* perhaps record something together in the future, but really, all the old band members are so busy with their new solo projects that it'll only be for fun, and if they can fit it into their schedules. But they say they had a good time at the reunion gigs and were touched that fans reacted so fondly. And before this goes on any longer, back to Erin's question - you may have also heard Julie singing backup on the last Tragically Hip album and also Gord Downie's solo album (she sang backup and played bass with him on his summer '01 tour as well), and she also did vocals on Ottawa band Snailhouse's last record. On a personal note, it's weird, I never was an Eric's Trip fan, so never really got into Julie's solo stuff until I saw her backing Gord Downie last summer... I thought she had a nice, and rather unique voice, so by the time I was assigned to write about her a few months later, I'd brushed up on her back catalogue and finally started to 'get' her music. I'm still not a huge fan of the early Broken Girl stuff, but she's a great writer and vocalist in her own way, and her most recent records, the French-language 'Desormais' and upcoming release are very quiet, stark, reflective stuff. It's been too long for some of us. I'm writing to see if any of you might be willing to hang up a few Emm flyers at college, work, or around town for the many upcoming shows. This requires as much effort as you want to put in - we can email you the flyers we're using if you're willing to print some out on your own to hang up. All of the shows are game so if you're interested in helping (even just putting up a couple of flyers in high traffic areas and telling your friends helps out tremendously), please email info@publicawareness.net and let us know what show(s) you'd like us to email you a flyer for.
