As I'm sure you're aware, Regent Park is a low-income area of government housing for under-privileged families, mostly new Canadians. With Ontario budget cuts being so severe in recent years, many schools in the area lost their music programs entirely. Several people in the Regent Park area put together their resources two years ago to create the Regent Park School of Music as a place where youth at risk can learn a musical instrument or sing in the RPSM choir, showing them alternate choices and a wider scope of experience than they see on their Toronto streets. The Regent Park School of Music is located at 534 Queen St. East, run by a board of directors whose aim is to educate children by allowing them to study music after school for a subsidized, affordable fee. There are currently 85 music students from 57 families in the neighborhood, taught by 15 professional part-time music teachers. Creating a safe and secure setting for youth to build confidence, develop discipline and have positive one-on-one mentoring experiences has been the challenge for this non-profit organization. Some local musicians are lending their time in helping to raise awareness and desperately needed funds for the Regent Park School of Music. A benefit show will take place Wednesday, February 13th, 2002 at the Rivoli (334 Queen St. W.) in Toronto. The theme of the night, however, is a little different. Rather than play their own material, each performer will sing two of his/her favourite Canadian songs, to give it a fun twist. Think back to the music classes you took when you were in school. Would your life have perhaps taken a different turn if you weren't exposed to that? Would you have learned to appreciate music without some guidance? We're trying to imagine a future for these kids that includes music. Please help support this initiative by coming out to see your favourite singers covering their favourite singers. Mark down February 13th on your calendar - I hope to see you there!
