[demime could not interpret encoding binary - treating as plain text] - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now that the year is officially over :-) I'm sending along my list of favourite albums from 2001. I've once again surprised myself by how little overlap there is between this and others' lists. 1. I Tried To Rock You But You Only Roll -- Leona Naess Aaaah, Leona rocks my world. Great songwriting. Incredibly catchy. You must hear "Mexico" and the title track. 2. This is Linda M -- Linda M A pleasure to listen to. Wonderful vocals. 3. The First Six Songs -- Jian (Ghomesi) Great political, social and humourous songwriting. While you can't capture the spontaeity of Jian in the studio, it's great music nonetheless. 4. Digitally Organic -- Pocket Dwellers You can't hear the Pocket Dwellers and not want to get up and dance. Great fusion of rock, jazz and hip-hop. 5. This Way -- Jewel A nice mix of acoustic folk, rock and country influences. This has a lot of Ms. Kilcher's older songs (like Sometimes it Be That Way) (read: back to her roots of good songwriting). Not Fritz Creek Store, but not Spirit, either. :) 6. The E Minor EP in F -- Jason Mraz This is a last-minute addition to the list -- I just got the CD, but c'mon, it's Jason Mraz. Acoustic folk at its best. 7. The Look of Love -- Diana Krall While it's not as good as her last effort -- _When I Look in Your Eyes_ -- I like the small band much better than the orchestra, Diana's voice is always worth a listening to. 8. Sarah Slean -- Sarah Slean I almost didn't want to include this, since it's mostly rereleases of earlier material ... but damnit, it's got "Bank Accounts" -- or at least one version of the EP does. :) 9. Aloha, Manitoba -- Luke Doucet Luke is the best electric guitarist I've heard. 10. In The Belly of a Whale -- Danny Michel I've run out of descriptions. :) Danny is a really good singer-songwriter who does a bit of folk and rocks out every now and then. [Aside: for those of you who know me -- look, it's 50% male singers. :) ] Other stuff I bought, some of which was released prior to 2001 - -------------------------------------------------------------- Live -- Jason Mraz Live -- Brenda Weiler Waiting -- Maren Ord Girl Versions -- Emm Gryner Still Waiting for Spring -- Matt Nathanson Comatised -- Leona Naess Happy -- Craig Cardiff The Cure for Bad Deeds -- Martina Sorbara For Him and the Girls -- Hawksley Workman* Whatever -- Aimee Mann Bliss Machine -- Holly Go Lightly Sforzando Piano -- snack! Becoming -- Jessica Weiser This Business of Art -- Tegan and Sara** Under Feet Like Ours -- Tegan and Sara* * not listened to yet (shame, shame) ** if this was released in 2001, it should be on the list, say #8 Favourite bands I "discovered" this year - ---------------------------------------- Linda M Jian Ghomeshi MadViolet Pocket Dwellers Luke Doucet Danny Michel Matt Nathanson Andrew Kerr Best Live Shows - --------------- 1. Steve Poltz, The Rivoli, Toronto, Ontario 2. Jian Ghomeshi w/ Pam and Rory from Hennessy, Ted's Wrecking Yard, Toronto, Ontario 3. Pocket Dwellers, La Luna, Hamilton, Ontario 4. Sarah Slean, Lee's Palace, Toronto, Ontario 5. madviolet, Gladstone Art Bar, Toronto, Ontario 6. Linda M, Raintree Cafe, Waterloo, Ontario 7. If you're a fan of his check out 'Veal'. It's a band that Luke is in. They are SO GOOD! Check themout and tell me what you think! ;) ~*PEACE*LOVE*HAPPINESS*~ **Shavonne** ~Every Tool's a Weapon if you Hold it Right~ - -Ani D. - ------------------------------------------------------------ GET VISIBLE! Okay, so everyone did their fave-rave albums of 2001, and rather than be redundant, I thought I'd maybe do my fave singles. How's that? I just looked them over, and I think that I was in a silly mood puttin the list together. 10. Sogggy Bottom Boys - Man of Constant Sorrow. Hey, give me a break, I've got kissin' cousins in West Virginia that I need to give props to. 9. Pink - Get The Party Started. I can't help it. I LOVE her. She's just so damned personable, I just want to pinch her rosy cheeks. Oh, and it's a fun song, too. 8. REM - Imitation of Life. REM on Prozac. 7. Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal. This one gives me ants in the pants. Gotta move! Gotta move! 6. Daft Punk - One More Time. I particularly like the breakbeat remix. 5. Garbage - Androgyny. I head for the ladies room every time I hear this. I have the arrest citations to prove it. 4. P.J. Harvey - You Said Something. Polly Jean's still got it. Quelle song! 3. Strokes - Last Night. Such a fun little ditty. Makes me think of 1977 for some reason. 2. Death Cab - Styrofoam Plates. Was this actually a single? Who cares! 1. Emm Gryner - Pour Some Sugar On Me. Makes many people I know feel naughty. Nuff Said! Umm... was this the single? Was there a single? ===== "Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death" http://smirky.com/ Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! I need a little help... sorry to post this here but I have run out of other ideas... I need some broadcasts from 1998 about the murder of Matthew Shepard. It is for my album and super important... if you happen to work for a station that has NPR that might be the best... I can pay for any postage or anything you need... I just desperately need this, preferably by the end of the month. Please email me if you can help me out or know of anyone that can!
