Hey everyone, Sorry to bother you with this post but I need help. I have a dilemma and my band gave me an ultimatum, basically saying that we have to be a "band" as opposed to it being me with them backing me, or else they'll split. Because they don't want to waste their time doing this only for me to get discovered and ditch them. You see, at first, they were in another band together, and I was just on the side, something for fun, but now their band is no more and they want to take me more seriously, *only if we're a band*. They say it's ego-centric for me to be a solo artist and have a band. I understand where they're coming from because we have written a few songs together, like a band does, in the past couple months, and I give them credit for that. But, they want credit for songs that they just write their own parts to. For instance, if I came to practice with a whole song written on guitar or piano, lyrics and all, and they just put drums and bass to it, they want songwriting credit! Since it's considered "music" , they feel their names should be on it too. But, they *have* been helping me get shows and exposure, so I don't know if I should do this with them and change the name so it's not Tricia Concepcion anymore, it would be a "band" name. But then I think they'd have to deal with the issues of having a girl as the frontman of the band. Look at No Doubt! Nobody knows anybody elses name in that band except Gwen Stefani! I guess I just like to write and sing because I like to, and if I get discovered, then cool, but they want to take it super seriously and make a living off of this, and I don't know if I'm ready to do that yet. The only way I can have this band and play shows with them is if I ditch my name and use a band name. And that is the decision I have to make. What do you think? You can email me privately if you don't want to flood the posts. First let me just say how cool it was to be on the "inside" so to speak and get to listen to all her new songs months before they are released. Very cool of Emm to share all her new music with us. Secondly, let me also say that I think this Wally Gagel is going to do some incredible things with her sound. I really like the last three songs that she played of the evening, "Free", "Symphonic", and "Beautiful Things", all of which were recorded between August and November of this year in L.A. It sounds like they've been hard at work in between all the touring, and I really like the sound of the new songs. Very upbeat. Everyone who knows me knows how much I love Emm's heartfelt ballads and her slower stuff, but I really love some of this new stuff too. So without eleborating too much, let me just give a quick recap of the evening. Emm started about 8:30pm and played 8 of the songs she is considering for her new CD, and she did little explanations in between each one. I, as well as everyone else, probably hadn't been to many "demo listening parties" before, so we all seemed a little unsure of how to react after each song. There was a lot of silence after the first song, which was the very cool "Saturday Night". But after the second song, everyone eased up a bit and started to applaud after every song, as if it was an actual concert. The songs she played: Saturday Night, End Credit Lullabye, Siamese Star, Starcraft Camper Blues, Northern Holiday, Free, Symphonic, and Beautiful Things. Then Tricia Concepcion came up and played us six songs. Two songs that were completely new to me, and let me tell you, the girl's guitar playing improves everytime I see her. She was very good and I loved the new songs. I can't remember the name of the first one, but the second was Smile and Laugh (I think), then she played Malcom, and her emotional zinger of the night, the beautiful In Memory Of, which she wrote for her cousin who she lost on Sept 11th. I think everyone in the room was in awe. After that, she played a cover, When I come around by Green Day, very cool version, and then she decided to change the atmosphere a bit after a bunch of sad songs and play a happy one, and everyone sang along and clapped as she played "You are my Sunshine". Then Emm came up and played three "older" songs for us. "Straight to You" she played for one of the shows hosts, then "Acid" for Laura and "Case of Tornadoes" for Steph and I, although I did try to get her to play "Serenade" to no avail. It was a great night despite the four hours of driving either way that we had to do on a weeknight, but it was fun and well worth it, and our host Lynn had a beautiful house in Toledo right near the U of T campus. It really provided a great and cozy atmosphere that was perfect for this night. Thanks guys! Sorry so long... Hope that was the cure for your fix, Gretchen! I knew everyone in the room was liking them. :-) Definitely glad she's sticking with Wally, I can't wait to hear what else comes out of that. Did anybody record those songs? I don't want to wait so long to hear them again... I think I could listen to Free and Symphonic over and over for hours. Oh, does anyone know who that weird girl was walking around with a big glass of wine and handing out programs? I don't think she was a Headliner. She had this funny skirt on, kept trying to talk to people.. man she was an odd one. The people Lynn invites, sometimes I don't know... Trish! Wait a darn tootin second here!!! Do not ever ever ever feel bad or think it is ego-centric to want to be a solo musician and have back up players. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN CONFRONTED WITH AN ULTIMATUM! In my opinion that is very insensitive. It should be up to you whether you want to be part of a BAND or not. Just know that being part of a band is completely different than being solo. Trust me I know. I had a similar situation where an old drummer would freak out every time I did a solo show. It was a screwed up situation and I for one did not like it in the least. Who knows.. if these guys remain your BACK UP and if you get discovered, the record company might want to take them on if you guys are tight enough and work well together. WHy would they waste their time and money hiring new musicians... they would only do that if your band sucked... and I certainly dont think it sucks! Trish I think you are phenomenally talented. You do only what you feel comfortable doing.. and if someting feels forced than do not do it! thats all there is to it!! Good luck!
