Absolutely. I think Jeff was wrong to offer (or acquiesce to the waitress's demand that) a portion of the cover charges to cover the waitress's own incompetence. I've never heard of such a thing occurring and it's pretty ridiculous. Suppose the situation was reversed; let's say there was poor promotion of the show, and very few people showed up. Would the performers be entitled to demand from the waitress a portion of her tips because they screwed up? > after sending an email back to jeff, stating that this was unfair, jeff > replied saying that because the vyletz left early, they forfeit their > portion of the cover and that the waitress was actually paid off through the > "other" performers share. (the vyletz DID inform jeff prior to the show that > they had to leave early cause my sister had to work very early the next > morning). Since when did Jeff stipulate that "leaving early" meant forfeiting getting paid for doing a gig? I've seen plenty of opening acts leave before the main performer goes on; there could be a multitude of reasons why the opening act has to do so, including other obligations. I agree that for performers, it's POLITE to stay around for at least a little while after one plays one's gig, but to impose that on performers is being a bit of a Nazi, IMHO. > I don't think the establishment or jeff stone handled this situation in the > right way. and i think the waitress should have paid for her own mistakes. it > is hard enough for struggling musicians in toronto to earn a living from > their craft, but situations like this make it even harder. Actually the Free Times has never particularly been kind to performers or the fans that go there to see them. I still clearly recall the time Rayanne played a gig there, and I attempted to order a coffee, but was informed by the waiter, very rudely, that there was a "minimum charge" in the back room and that I would be levied a $5 fee for the coffee if I didn't order anything else. Then, in the same vein of being a laissez-faire capitalist bastard, he later stole Rayanne's chair to give to a patron -- while she was on stage playing! I hope I don't ruffle any feathers by bringing up the race card, but it also turns into another case of folks acting poorly and playing right into racist/cultural stereotypes. Just like the small minority of black individuals who are violent and ruin the image of blacks everywhere, the behaviour of the Free Times and their staff tarnish the image of Jews everywhere. As if Jews don't have a hard enough time fighting the racist stereotype that they're money-grubbing bastards, here we have Jewish propietors of an establishment playing right into that. They're doing nobody a favour. - - Julian [ Julian C. Interestingly, and related to the whole drug movement theory, I always think of Forrest Gump. Specifically, the party where Jen-ny (you'll have to imagine the accent), gets all freaked out and runs to the balcony to lean over the edge... Regardless of the specific reference, the image comes across pretty clearly, I think.
