I couldn't limit myself to just 10, so here's me Top 15 Countdown, along with a few comments: 15. The Donnas - Turn 21 Guilty pleasure of the year...all that time spent studying their Ramones and AC/DC records has definitely paid off! :) 14. Swollen Members - Bad Dreams Regardless of what Kardinal Offishall might think, the Members are the best that Canadian hip-hop has to offer...don't be surprised if this album wins them the Juno again next year. 13. Good Riddance - Symptoms of a Levelling Spirit They may not be the absolute best political punk band around (see #6), but they're awfully close, and getting better with every record. 12. Saves The Day - Stay What You Are Saves The Day are definitely growing up, moving into more Promise Ring-ish emo territory, and the change suits them very well. 11. The Get Up Kids - Eudora You know you're doing something right when your b-sides & rarities collection is better than most bands' regular albums! :) 10. Entombed - Morning Star The token metal album on this year's list ;) Not for everyone, but when it comes to this kind of stuff, nobody does it better. 9. Dilated Peoples - Expansion Team They may have moved up to a major label, but their sound is still firmly rooted in the L.A. underground...hip-hop the way it should be done. 8. The Dirtmitts - The Dirtmitts My favourite new Canadian band...Sonic Unyon does it again! 7. Hey Mercedes - Everynight Fire Works If it weren't for Weezer, this would be the best power-pop album of the year...simply a blast to listen to. 6. Propagandhi - Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes The best political punk band in the world right now, straight out of Winnipeg. 5. Pete Rock - Petestrumentals A mostly instrumental collection of excellent beats from one of hip-hop's most legendary producers. 4. Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American Maybe not quite as good as their 1999 masterpiece Clarity, but still a fantastic album..."Sweetness" gets my vote for song of the year. 3. Tool - Lateralus A complex, challenging epic that just gets better with every listen...five years was a long time to wait, but if they're going to keep making albums this good, they can take all the time they want. 2. Weezer - Weezer All bow before the pop genius of Rivers Cuomo! :) 1. The Appleseed Cast - Low Level Owl (Volumes 1 and 2) I usually have trouble picking a single album as my absolute favourite, but not this year. Brilliant, amazing, stunning, breathtaking...you name the superlative, it applies. I can't say enough good things about this album...I very, very strongly urge everyone to check it out. With honourable mentions to: Girl Versions From Autumn To Ashes - Too Bad You're Beautiful Ani Difranco - Revelling/Reckoning Aceyalone - Accepted Eclectic *********************************************** Mike Keast (mikekeast@email.com) http://www.geocities.com/dtswd/frames.html http://www.live365.com/stations/260845 *********************************************** - -- _______________________________________________ 1 cent a minute calls anywhere in the U.S.! http://www.getpennytalk.com/cgi-bin/adforward.cgi?p_key=RG9853KJ&url=http://www.getpennytalk.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2001 01:01:16 -0500 From: "Robert Tittel" Subject: Re: Top Ten of 2001 Rob's Top Ten CDs of 2001: (in no particular order) 1) Creeper Lagoon - Take back the universe... 2) Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American 3) Emm Gryner - Girl Versions 4) John Mayer - Room for Squares 5) Death Cab for Cutie - The Photo Album 6) Melissa Ferrick - Valentine Heartache 7) Poe - Haunted 8) Weezer - The Green Album 9) Maren Ord - Waiting 10) Glen Phillips - Abulum Honorable mention: Joydrop - Viberate, Tori Amos - Strange Little Girls, Live - V, & Pete Yorn - Musicforthemorningafter Some newer discoveries/older CDs stumbled upon this year that ended up being pleasant surprises: 1) The PushStars - After the party 2) Joydrop - Metasexual 3) Jimmy Eat World - Static prevails 4) Paul Westerberg - 14 songs Some CDs I wanted to pick up but never got around to it, so I don't know if they could have been in my Top ten or not: Natalie Merchant-Motherland, Incubus-Morning View, Radiohead-Amnesiac, Built to Spill-Ancient Melodies from the future, Leona Naess-I tried to rock but you only roll, Matt Nathanson - Still waiting for Spring, Ivy - Long Distance, and the new Ben Folds disc.
