Just chiming in on the whole Michelle Branch discussion... actually, you can hear "All you wanted" in both my station, Jericho Two, and Attila's, i believe, Dreamsawake (FTE Radio). We've been playing it for months... Listen now before radio kills it for good... end shameless plug.... I got an advance of her album (and knew about her from her indie days when she had an indie record out...which you can still get. Produced by Rick Neigher, who has produced Melanie Doane records along with many others, and it's much more acoustic and not as overproduced as her new one) and the first song I heard was "Everywhere" and while I find it very catchy, I knew immediately that it was produced specifically to be a single. It's got that AAA radio/MTV pop/single format going on--a zillion layers of bg vocals, big drums and guitars, quick verses into the chorus, a chorus that stays in your head all day, lyrics that seemingly everyone can understand, sparkly production, etc., etc.... The rest of the album is better than the single, imho, if you're into pop/rock type music. I admit that I did listen to the record quite a bit this summer because I just needed something upbeat/happy to listen to... then a few weeks later I moved on to! > something else... The lyrics aren >'t all that deep or anything, and the production/songs get annoying after awhile (song after song it's the same thing...), BUT it's not a bad record really. It has its moments :) > >I know what you're saying about the single and it being overplayed, though. That's totally the record label. I read an article earlier this summer pre-Michelle's record release, about Maverick and some of their woes and how they were completely relying on Michelle's record and Alanis Morissette's new one (which was supposed to be out in June)... apparently they were having some issues at the label (would have to dig up the article because I can't remember all of the specifics)... So they are REALLY pushing Michelle's record. It has, no pun intended, been everywhere. The new single isn't even being released until the new year... It's called "All you wanted" and it's not too different from "Everywhere" in the format/production... so.... yeah. > >And never hide if you don't like something ;) I think it's cool that everyone here likes lots of different kinds of music and isn't afraid to give their opinion if something sucks. :) > >Jess, who would rather listen to "everywhere" than "i'm a slave 4 u" if she was stranded on a deserted island ;) > >www.jessicaweiser.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Nov 2001 11:28:42 EST From: Plmrrik@aol.com Subject: Re: Natalie Merchant RE: Michelle Branch vs. Plumb vs. Jennifer Paige Saw Natalie last Wednesday, Awesome show. She did a lot off the new CD. High points were This house is on fire, Motherland, and I will not beg. Along with about five songs each from Tigerlilly and Ophelia plus two 10,000 Maniacs tunes. It was at a small venue (a high school auditorium where they occasionally have concerts) and her stage lighting was very cool. The only downside was wish she played longer (though it was just under two hours including her twenty minute, five song encore) and that she had very little interaction with the audience (though that did leave more room for her singing). ----Rick---- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Nov 2001 22:44:05 From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: OAC: Sarah Harmer Hey, all... Has anyone seen Sarah Harmer on this latest leg of her tour (as in, the last week or so)? Because she was playing last night in her hometown of Kingston, and usual cohort Kevin Fox was *here*, in Toronto, hosting an open mike at the Art Bar! How very odd... Anyone know if she's changed her band for the latest tour? That would be terribly disappointing, as the last incarnation, with Kevin on bass and cello and BG vocals, plus John Obercian on drums and Gord Tough on guitar, was quite sublime, and having played together for so long, it was like second nature to them. As good as Kevin is when he plays with *anyone*, including his superlative, legendary time with both Emm and Slean, he was *meant* to play with Sarah H. I can't even imagine anyone else singing with her - I get annoyed even *thinking* about it (even if James used to feverently will Kevin to stop overtaking the choruses in 'Don't Get Your Back Up'). ;) I guess I'm just kind of hoping the new band (if there is one?) isn't the backing players she had with her for the Letterman appearance - not only did I not recognize any of them, I didn't particularly think they sounded all that great. And good heavens, I hope usual Harmer soundman Marty Kinack (Transistor Sound & Lighting Co.) isn't providing useless keyboard plinking like he was during the BNL tour last summer... Oi. :P Anyhow, if anyone's seen any of the recent shows, so weigh in, please! Also, look for Sarah on MuchMusic at 3 pm Monday, Nov. 26th... Looking forward to a Harmer weekend in Toronto, - - Tab :) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Nov 2001 01:25:02 From: "Justine L" Subject: Re: OAC: Sarah Harmer Although my memory may be failing me, I'm 99% sure Kevin was not with Sarah when she played London back in September.
