Hey, everyone... Hope everyone is well. While it seems that almost everything these days seems inconsequential, I do think it's more important than ever to concentrate on social justice issues, and in that spirit, I just wanted to let everyone know about the release of the recent "GasCD" project spearheaded by local musician Chris Brown (of Brown and Fenner). Chris called upon an incredible array of musicians and activists for the double-CD, proceeds of which will benefit protesters arrested in Quebec City during the Summit of the Americas this past April. I was in Quebec City at the time, and if anyone had any doubts as to the level of police brutality during that weekend, well, I'm here to let you know that it *was* nothing short of shocking. And as Chris points out, you don't need to share the protesters' political viewpoints to believe that they do have the right to a fair trial, and to that effect, funds will go to the Quebec Legal Defence Collective. The CD features Barenaked Ladies, Ani DiFranco, and Sarah Harmer (the refurbished Weeping Tile track "1st Lady") among others, and the liner notes were written by noted Toronto activists/authors Avi Lewis (host of CBC Newsworld's "Counterspin")and Naomi Klein ("No Logo"). I spoke to Naomi, Sarah, and Chris at the press conference to launch the CD earlier this month, and the video feature can be found at the UmbrellaMusic website now, or you can also link to it at the MapleMusic website, where the CD is available for order. http://www.umbrellamusic.com http://www.maplemusic.com Or if you want to go straight to the video segment itself: http://www.umbrellamusic.com/umbrellatv/umbtv01sept10high-gascd.asx As Naomi says, not only is this a great project for a great cause, but a CD set chock-full of excellent music as well. So go check out the UmbrellaTV feature for more info, then get yourself a copy of the album itself! - - Tab :) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Sep 2001 15:13:06 -0400 From: "courtneylove@dork .com" Subject: emm question - is this real? emmgryner - 11/02/01 toronto, ON at First Canadian Place? ooooook bye _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ End of headline-girl-digest V4 #214 ***********************************
