Everybody keeps Yeah, the song "E-mail" is so freaking awesome. About the music industry and being indie and it just rocks :) I love it and the trumpet is so damn cool. That's not really it, exactly. I mean, what you heard that night is pretty much what you get from now on with her. That is to say, that more spacey-loungey, blues-type material. That's just where's she at now. But yes, it's fair to say that her vocals weren't maybe as strong as they usually are (the first time I saw her play, it was that *voice* that floored me - Dan Kurtz of The New Deal, who produced her first album, recalls having the exact same reaction), but musically she's moved pretty far away from the very indie-pop style of her first record. >So I'm willing to give her another try -- especially with the album, >which >you (and others) say is quite different from her live >performances. I >recall that she specifically dissociated herself from >the album, implying >that she didn't think that was where she is now, >musically. That's it, exactly. I think because that album and the songs on it are so old to her now, she feels a bit *beyond* it. Also, being her very first solo effort, she's obviously moved on from it and is very much in the moment with the new material. I was really surprised how hesitant she was to play 'The Mast', because that's normally one of her favourite songs still - at her last local show back in April, she introduced it by saying wistfully, "It has no 'hit' qualities, but I still love it, you know? Still love it." She's pressed up a couple new EPs of a live set from back in March when she opened for Danny Michel at the Rivoli, and I remember really, really loving the raw energy of that set while being *at* the show. But listening to it on my stereo, it sounds and feels very different from my memory of it - a lot more like this past Saturday's show and less... *vibrant* than I remembered it to be. Not to say at all that it's anything less than brilliant, because it *is*, and I love it - but what it underscores for me is the fact that I have to accept that whatever comes next from her is NOT going to be "Monarch", an album that I adore. But I know that, and that's okay, too. >That's why I was careful to not be specific about the things I >disliked >about Feist's set (i.e. in general I found her to be far too >languid and >loungy-bluesy for my tastes); I wanted to clarify whether >those things are >regular features of her performance, or whether or >not they were one-off >quirks. Well, certainly not one-off, but because her performance is very elastic, there *is* the chance you might like her the next time you see her. These days, seeing her play with a full band is a rare thing, but perhaps once the new album comes out, we'll be seeing a bit more of that, which is a different-sounding thing again. Keeping in mind that it's a snapshot of where she was at back *then*, I think you'd really like "Monarch", Julian. It's a very 'pop' record compared to what she's doing now. I really, really miss hearing some of those songs live. >I'll certainly give her another spin at some point. However, when she wrote those songs, she was coming out of a punk-rock background and was just starting to feel her way through what she wanted her solo voice to be. "Monarch", by all accounts, was just a beautiful mistake, a musical experiment conducted by a few friends in downtown Toronto basements. Dan Kurtz was learning how to produce as her produced it, Leslie was learning how to *sing* instead of scream, and they were joined by a cast of characters that would go on to become some of this city's most important indie artists (Peaches, Gonzales/Jason Beck, Jamie Shields, Martin Tielli, Jose Contreras et al.). I'm not entirely sure how *she* feels about the album itself other than having moved on from it musically, but I do certainly hope she knows what a remarkable piece of work it is. >Feist has changed a great deal from its early incarnation, (well Dan >Kurtz did still play a mean bass way back then). The band was more >edgy, >more punk, less grace and much less distinctiveness; Leslie did What is "Feist" has changed so much over the last 3 years that sometimes it's been different from week to *week*. I remember seeing her play NXNE last year at C'est What with just Dean Stone on drums, then a couple days later play Stardust Picnic with a full band (Daddy Szigeti et al), and then totally solo just a few days after *that*. And each show sounded much different from the next. I think it was that same versatility that attracted me to her music (other than the album itself). >unfortunately her largest flaw is that she expects a lot from her > >listeners; expects that we can dig the complex structures, the >building >up and breaking down of internal frameworks; its >not what we've come to expect from a song qua 'song'.
