Her voice and guitar playing were certainly quite interesting and unique. And, of course, I'll allow for the possibility that she might just have been having a bad day. So I'm willing to give her another try -- especially with the album, which you (and others) say is quite different from her live performances. I recall that she specifically dissociated herself from the album, implying that she didn't think that was where she is now, musically. That's why I was careful to not be specific about the things I disliked about Feist's set (i.e. in general I found her to be far too languid and loungy-bluesy for my tastes); I wanted to clarify whether those things are regular features of her performance, or whether or not they were one-off quirks. > But it's that very willingness to change and adapt and experiment that > endears her to me - she's one of the most fiercely unique and interesting > performers in this city right now, and I champion her for that. I know a lot of people (such as yourself) hold her in high regard. A lot of people hold folks like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen in high regard, too, but it also doesn't mean I have to like them. :) I'll certainly give her another spin at some point. I just wanted to throw out my first impressions, to get some feedback about what people thought. Thanks for all the info, Tab. And of course, thanks so much for organizing the gig on Saturday night. I'm sorry I wasn't able to stick around for Luke Doucet, but I was worn out from a full day of developing pictures. :-( But Jian Ghomeshi was surprisingly and refreshingly good, although his political bent leaves a lot to be desired, IMHO (something we can discuss later, if you all like.) - - Julian [ Julian C. I recall that she specifically > dissociated herself from the album, implying that she didn't think that was > where she is now, musically. She's also exceptionally humble. She has confidence in her work, but its well-tempered by that humility. Monarch is a great album, while she's gone beyond it musically, I think her humility won out over good sense. One A.D., Family, The Mast, et al ... are exceptional material. Feist has changed a great deal from its early incarnation, (well Dan Kurtz did still play a mean bass way back then). The band was more edgy, more punk, less grace and much less distinctiveness; Leslie did have a wonderful voice then too. In terms of musicianship, she's light-years from where she started, but there was always a kernel, a glimmer of something truly unique about her work, unfortunately her largest flaw is that she expects a lot from her listeners; expects that we can dig the complex structures, the building up and breaking down of internal frameworks; its not what we've come to expect from a song qua 'song'. I recall her first solo show as Feist (January 16, 1998 - The Rivoli, opening for Sun* and Phonocomb; Dan Kurtz on bass, Josh Hicks on drums) was pretty slick for the few hours of practice they had and its jsut gotten better. > That's why I was careful to not be specific about the things I disliked about > Feist's set (i.e. in general I found her to be far too languid and > loungy-bluesy for my tastes); I wanted to clarify whether those things are > regular features of her performance, or whether or not they were one-off > quirks. The languid nature of her voice... well its normally more clear, like Slean's was that night, but there is a languid, lazy tone to a lot of the works on Monarch. A dream-like fuzz pervades the album. But it wasn't always that way... early on it was counterbalanced with an edginess in the music, a bit more raw and visceral. > of people hold folks like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen in high regard, too, but > it also doesn't mean I have to like them. :) No, you don't at all, its all a matter of taste. James. * Note to Steve Ito - Sorry! I swear, Sun sounded good that night, I was amazed and I know, two weeks later they sucked horribly. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 11:26:24 -0400 From: "J.Daniels" Subject: Open Mike Hey 'Liners Emm's going to be on Open Mike with Mike Bullard once again. I'm interviewing her soon for Out in Columbus and I just wanted to get an idea of what questions her fans really want answered. I don't just want to ask the usual "when did you get started in music" sort of questions.
