Subject: May I take a moment to say: Firstly: Emm was truly fabulous on Thursday nite at Lees... I hate Lees palace..but I forced myself to go there to see EMM and I'm so glad that I made that decision. What a huge talent she is. I loved her set and I was tickled pink that she played Case of Tornadoes and Southern Dreamer! Secondly: I'd like to say that I think it's wonderful that everyone on this list is so accepting and passionate about indie music. Its great to see that that we as listeners will give ecclectic music a chance. We venture from music the fits the mainstream mold into a whole other world of unchartered territory where artists are challanging the listener with something that has substance and depth. So give yourselves a pat on the back.. cause there are so many narrow-minded listners out there that will limit their music taste to one genre...if they only knew the magic they were missing out on. Thirdly: regarding Julian's Leslie Feist post. I love the album Monarch because the production on it is so interesting with crazy strings and guitar stuff. As for her live performance.. when she sings I believe every word she's saying ...its not like she has to convince me...I guess you can say I appreciate her honesty. She has a honey sweet voice as well. However this is my opinion so Julian ..such is life... you say tom-EH-to I say to-MA-to... we are all entitled to our opinions! sorry for my bad spelling... No, there's actually been a lot of talk about this among her fans (who will defend her, of course). I think it's just a coincidence since it's such a standard progression but who knows. Michelle's album is really upbeat, kind of overproduced but not entirely in a negative way. Here's the review of Thursday's show from the Globe and Mail. Girl of Summerlong exhibits star power By ALAN NIESTER Special to The Globe and Mail Saturday, August 25, 2001 - Print Edition, Page R13 Emm Gryner At Lee's Palace in Toronto on Thursday If, God forbid, singer-songwriter Emm Gryner were to be abducted by aliens tomorrow, thereby never releasing (on this planet at least) another record or CD, her place in the country's pop-music history books would still be forever enshrined. For back in 1998, Gryner released a little pop confection called Summerlong, which instantly took its place on the list of all-time summer pop classics alongside the Lovin' Spoonful's Summer in the City, Mungo Jerry's In the Summertime, and Andrea by the Sunrays (which is still the best summer song ever, and probably always will be). Summerlong was frothy, catchy and instantly memorable, the kind of song custom-made for cheap radios and Wayne's World-type sing-alongs on hot summer nights with the car windows rolled down. It echoed great girl groups from the Shangri-Las to the Bangles to (especially) the Go-Gos. And it cemented Gryner's reputation overnight as an up-and-comer in the industry. What we've learned about the 26-year-old, southwestern Ontario-raised singer since then, however, suggests that Summerlong was not so much a typical part of her repertoire as much as it was something of a fluke, an aberration almost. For Gryner is many things -- a classically trained pianist, now a backing singer and musician in David Bowie's band when Mr. Thin White Duke decides to tour. But she is not, it seems, the second coming of Belinda Carlisle. If anything, she is more like the second coming of Tori Amos. Thursday night at Lee's Palace, Gryner returned to the Toronto stage for what was nominally a release party for her newest album, Girl Versions. And in the tradition of artists from Amos to Annie Lennox to Cat Power to Vonda Sheppard, Gryner has created an album full of covers -- interpretations of songs by artists as diverse as Blur, Ozzy Osbourne, the Clash and a handful of others. Thursday's performance was predominantly (though not completely) a run-through of these numbers. Although sporadically backed by a traditional rock power trio (guitar, drums, bass), the most affecting moments of the evening came when Gryner performed solo, or nearly so, backing up her vocals with her own ornate keyboard work. Her version of Def Leppard's Pour Some Sugar on Me, backed by her swelling Elton John-styled keyboard work, was a showstopper, as it turned the head-banging rock anthem into a work of steaming sexual tension. Her like-minded version of Nick Cave's Straight to You was Tori Amos-intense, while her encore version of Stone Temple Pilots' Big Bang Baby was presented with more of a Summerlong-style pop sheen. The crowd, which greeted Gryner warmly, was also treated to a few of her older numbers. Summerlong got the full band treatment, but was given more of an edge than in the radio-friendly version (deservedly so, if one listens closely to the lyrics instead of just belting out the chorus); 89 Days of Alcatraz was edgy and slightly off-kilter; while 1999's Southern Dreamer found Gryner accompanying herself on acoustic guitar. Oddly, though, for an artist whose performing history has ranged from a series of intimate house concerts all the way up to performing at Wembley Stadium (with Bowie), Gryner's between-song interaction with the audience was often rambling and awkward. But the moment her fingers hit the keyboard, her confidence soared in the same measure as her vocal stylings, and suggested that, while she may not yet be a major star in this country, it is certainly only a matter of time. >Hey, >Just wondering if anyone caught the review in the Globe in Saturday's paper? >Just interested in what they had to say and their two-sense-worth! Okay, now that I've picked myself off the floor, allow me to fight the urge to shake my good friend Mr. Dunn and explain the Sheer Genius That is Feist. ;-) First off, like James said, her set that night at our show wasn't exactly usual Feist. She was trying out some new stuff and was really tired from moving to a new place that day, so even I found that her vocals weren't quite a strong as always (take a listen to the album version of "The Mast", the song that Kristy requested, for example - her voice is absolutely *crystalline* on that track), and she seemed to be having a lot of trouble with her tunings, as well. Plus, it should be noted, that the grrl hasn't played in awhile - this was her first local show in over 4 months. Now that I've gotten all the excuses out of the way , what makes Leslie interesting is her incredibly unique songs, amazing voice, and killer guitar playing. She's the only guitar player in town that the guys (Danny Michel, Luke Doucet, Ian LeFeuvre) hold in awe. Unfortunately, she didn't play any of her rockier tunes (like "Family", her best-known song, which James pointed out), so we didn't really get to see that side of her, but on tunes like the Ron Sexsmith cover she did, that raw energy and power really came across. Her new batch of songs are very, very different than her first CD, "Monarch", which I actually think you would love, Julian - it's much more 'pop', with catchy melodies drenched in strings. Her new work seems to be taking on more of an experimental bent - a friend of mine called it "Cowboy Junkies on narcotics", and I think that's perhaps apt. ;-) Also, as far as Feist goes, her live renditions of songs are always quite different from the album versions - she hasn't been playing much of anything off "Monarch" (which is a good 2 years old now) lately, but when she did, she'd always take a bit of different take on them. And I assume the same will hold true for the new album when that comes out later this year. And her sound changes completely *again* when she has a full band, obviously (like last year at our benefit show she played an excellent set with Emm's current drummer, Dean Stone, and some other friends). But it's that very willingness to change and adapt and experiment that endears her to me - she's one of the most fiercely unique and interesting performers in this city right now, and I champion her for that. I only hope we don't lose her to Europe like we already have so many of her friends/contemporaries (Dave Szigeti, Jason Beck et al). Sorry this is so long, but one of the joys of music for me is to be able to share one's favourites with others, so if I can get even one person turned onto Leslie Feist, it'll be worth it. :-) She has only a few soundclips at her site, but if anyone you know has her first album, "Monarch", or you find it in your local music store, have a listen - I'm pretty sure many Emm fans would dig it. Also, for a listen of her full-band live show (from a great-sounding gig last year), go to: http://www.primeticket.net/cgi-bin/primeticket-archive.cgi?artistname=Feist&artistalias=feist&realfile0=feist.rm (Or just go to PrimeTicket.net and look in the Archives List.) Hope everyone who came out to the benefit show on Saturday had a great time, and my thanks to anyone who did make it out!
