For those of you who do not know, the Birchmere is a medium-sized venue that was packed to the gills with mostly Jonatha Brooke fans, but also a small number of Emm fans with powerful lungs. You could tell who they were by their beaming grins that gave away their pride in their favorite petite Filipina-Canadian. If pressed to give an exact number in attendance, this observer would have to say the number of people attending was somewhere between gobs (upper three-figures) and oodles (low four-figures). Disaster! The early evening found a distraught Ms. Gretchen worried by Emm's lack of access to a piano. As we all know, the piano is our starlet's instrument of choice, so this was a big deal! The natives would be restless.... And yet as the lights dimmed, on she struts, confident, and wearing a red dress. You read right, a *dress*. You know, one of those one-piece things with a bodice and skirt all built into one smashing crimson garment (think: the eleventh song on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack). Good thing she was wearing a stylish pair of boots (I'm guessing Steve Madden) and not a pair of matching pumps because I would have wondered if maybe I had arrived at the wrong show. The set began with a particularly angry version of Sort of Human Being and ended with a perfectly paced Starcraft Camper Blues. In between, in no particular order, were Southern Dreamer, Boy Races, Disco Lights and This Mad (I may have missed something). Between songs she was charming and funny and extremely personable. Well done. Later... Me. P.S. Oh yeah, Jonatha. Oddly, I agreed to go to the show with my friend Christie *before* I knew that Emm was opening. I really can't say that I'm a fan (she's a little too country/blues/roots-rock for my tastes) but it was a fun show. She was very good and, truthfully, her stories between songs were worth the price of admission. ===== "Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death" http://smirky.com/ Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! She's soo funny. Love her. I haven't seen her live in a very long time (1998 I think) and would love to catch her material from Steady Pull live at some point... Perhaps she'll come back around this way again sometime soon =) I heard she played "So Much Mine" which is a favorite song of mine from the days of the The Story (for anyone who doesn't know, she and Jennifer Kimball released a few albums together before Jonatha went solo). We, (Steve 'n me) being the huge Emm-fans we are, of course went because she was opening. First time seeing Jonatha Brooke perform...and altho' I didn't quite get into her music...I really did enjoy her show. She is very charming & witty! Emm was GREAT even without her beloved ivories! :) And she too, very cool, funny & just the amazing talent she is.... All 'n all well worth the ticket price! Great show!
