Hey kids, I re-discovered this one issue of Elle while cleaning out my room a couple of weeks ago. Just thought I'd share the Emm blurb... Elle July '98 the BEST of the month On Public, Emm Gryner sings like Sarah McLachlan, pounds the ivories a la Fiona Apple, and borrows the lyric "pieces of you" from Jewel. The twenty-two-year-old's accomplished musicianship (playing eight instruments, from bass to Wurlitzer) explains why Lilith Fair is in her future. -- James Patrick Herman While I object to the comparisons, I still think it is very cool that Public is with best of the month. There is also a pic of Emm in a black sweater. Sometimes it pays to have three-year-old magazines under your bed. That was actually the first time I had heard of Emm, the first time I *heard* Emm was a few months later when someone gave my friend (and not me) a promo cassette at a concert (which she has since given me). I went to my very first Emm show last month at the Point, and I meant to post about it then, but was stuck in the midst of finals. It was fantastic to FINALLY get to see her, I swear I've been trying unsuccessfully to get my ass to a show since she opened for the Cardigans at the TLA. I was hoping someone could email me the setlist, I wrote it down a couple of days after the show, & I know it is not in the correct order. thanks! :) ~Elizabeth ------------------------------ Date: 7 Jun 2001 04:24:46 EDT From: Elizabeth Weber Subject: OAC: Amnesiac, Grandaddy/Coldplay, Shea Seger's debut Let me preface this by saying that I LOVE Radiohead. They can do no wrong. ;) Along with Tori Amos, they make up the top tier of my very favorite music. So I'm biased. I LOVE Kid A. Great album. My favorite Radiohead album, one of my favorite albums in general. Brilliant stuff, really. I bought Amnesiac on Friday, and it is definitely Kid A's little sister. It doesn't grab me as much as Kid A did, the soundscapes aren't as lush. I do find that Amnesiac is warmer and more emotionally involved, Kid A is somewhat cold and emotionally detached (but in a positive way). I like Amnesiac a lot, but I haven't really been able to give it the attention it deserves yet. Someone mentioned Coldplay in their Radiohead post, so I have to go into this now. hehe. I went to see Grandaddy/Coldplay @ the Electric Factory on Saturday (unfortunately having to pass up Appel Farm w/ Sarah Harmer, Ron Sexsmith, & other cool people) AND THE SHOW ROCKED. I had such a kick ass time, great seeing two of my favorite bands on the same bill. I love Coldplay so much more now after seeing them live, and the new stuff is pretty damn cool. Chris Martin is fantastically insane and energetic (and very, very talkative). Grandaddy and Coldplay were both filmed, so let's hope something comes of it. We had so much fun, we went home and bought tickets to the Radio City Music Hall show. It is pretty easy to rationalize such purchases and subsequent train excursions in the middle of the night. ;) Point being, go see Grandaddy & Coldplay. Several times if possible. Also picked up Shea Seger's debut The May Street Project on Friday. Saw her perform the oh-so-catchy Last Time on Conan a few weeks ago. The album is pretty good, you guys will probably like her. Ron Sexsmith sings and plays guitar on Always (which was a surprise). Okay, my apologies for the long-windedness. I have both the new Air and the new Radiohead. I think the new Radiohead is a beautiful soundscape, though none of the individual tracks stand out to me yet. I thought Kid A was much better and I pretty much love that entire album. I also got the limited edition Amnesiac and recommend that you track it down - it's lovely. The new Air is great - again, one big dreamy album. My boyfriend and I listened to it in the car and it was the perfect soundtrack to our drive. marla tiara ===== ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Famous people wearing my tiara: http://www.marlatiara.com (*updated 05/16/01 - Margo Timmins!)
