I love writing poetry, and I love sharing it, so it's so discouraging when friends turn me down because they are afraid they won't "get it". Sometimes there isn't anything *to get*, or what is there to glean doesn't require complicated literary analysis. :) One of my favorite poems is by Karla Kuskin, who writes for children. The poem is called "Bugs," and reads, I believe: "I love bugs / I kiss them / and give them hugs." :) As for good modern day poets, I just met Dorianne Laux yesterday. She focuses on personal narrative, and the great majority of it is very moving and straight forward. Ever read Pablo Neruda's work? (Ok, he's not *quite* present, as he passed away in 1972). Some of his poetry, i.e., the few books of odes that he wrote, are about ordinary things looked at in extraordinary ways, and the metaphor that is in the poems isn't completely out of reach. What one sees on the page is really all that needs to be seen. I have nothing better to do than respond to email. One thing that just came to mind as far as modern poetry is Shel Silverstein, who wrote "Where the Sidewalk Ends." If I recall, it's poetry mainly written for an adolescent market, but I seem to recall there were some pretty good poems in there. Nothing too deep or hard to read, but just silly, funny things that sometimes hold a deeper lesson. Again, it's from somewhere in the 70s and 80s, but I still call that modern. I think how we respond to poetry depends on what we like. Personally, I'm drawn to the rhythm and diction of some of the romantic poets more than anything. In my mind, some poets just try too hard. Give me something that's pleasing to the tongue and ear, and if it means something, all the better. I still remember the poem I memorized back in 6th grade by Lord Byron: She walks in beauty like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies And all that's best of dark and bright Meets in her aspect and her eyes One ray the more, one shade the less Had half impaired the nameless grace That waves in every raven tress And softly lightens o'er her face The smiles that win, the tints that glow How soft, how calm their dwelling place A mind at peace with all below A heart whose love is innocent I'm sure a word or two is wrong, but I still like it. Nothing deep there. Well, there can be if you overanalyze it. Compare that to Robert Frost (definitely a more modern poet) who wrote "But I took the road less travelled" in one of his more famous poems. He's talking of a crossroads, but he really talks about the crossroads of life and how he chose his own path. I forget the name of the poem, but I remember it brilliantly evokes the calm of a light snow. It works on multiple levels. I'm sure someone here probably knows the rest of the poem. I think it starts "As I went walking one evening..." Anyway, just my thoughts on poetry. I'm not familiar with any "current" poets, but I think they must be pretty good considering the number of times musicians quote them. What you've written above reminds me of something one of the best profs I've ever had said to one of my English Lit classes in college which will probably stay with me for the rest of my life (particularly because I write (and read) a lot of prose, poetry, lyrics, etc.)-- once you understand the power of language, you don't want to use words cheaply. Or something like that. I love poetry. I gained a huge respect for it in college while studying English Lit and Creative Writing (English minor) and have an even greater respect for language and the people who are so good writing poetry, prose, etc. Some of my favorites include Neruda, Rilke, Plath, Ginsberg, etc. So many more actually... jess www.aftersilence.net | www.jessicaweiser.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2001 09:05:54 -0500 (EST) From: "Julian C. Last night I shot a Carolyn Dawn Johnson CD release party on DV... not sure I love her CD (a little too much country twang for me) but her live show is fantastic (even through a video camera viewfinder!), highly recommended. After Carolyn I rushed over to see the last half of T.O.'s DMB CD Release party... missed the listening party bit but saw the last half of a preview of the new "All Access" IMAX movie - and was blown away. All lovers of live music *must* see this film on IMAX! I had a wee bit of difficulty because of the snow, but just took trains from NY to Philly to Bryn Mawr and ended up making it to the show before it started. Because of the horrid conditions, there were only about 10-15 people there and Emm, Meg, and Nini Camps (who is an old friend of Meg's) just played in the round, taking turns playing songs but improvising on each others. I thought Nini Camps was AMAZING and everyone should go check out her band at www.lovepie.com. I think Emm played Wisdom Bus, Acid, Disco Lights (which was soooo good with Meg and Nini accompanying on guitar), Boy Races, End Credit Lullaby, and Hello Aquarius. And there was a little Wind Beneath My Wings, Every Rose has its Thorn, Paradise City, and some other tasty treats thrown into the mix to accompany the firetrucks blaring outside. I believe it was right after Boy Races that Dana, Nicky, Nicky's dad, Gretchen (sporting a lovely "fuck you you fuckin' fuck" shirt), Chris, and Paul all finally arrived. All in all, I think the chaos was worth it. Definitely a fun show to be at. My friend Mike who was at the show says, "I think I'm in love with Meghan Toohey." Poetry is all about expression It is about sharing I f one million ppl read your poem and one just pone person gets something out of it then it was worth it Poetry is about the ability ot otuch ppl with words to make thm stop and think or laugh or cry or maybe just share a common bond because they can identify with your poem So who really cares what is poetry or what isn't start looking for the inspiration behind the words it's there I guarantee it.. Um, yeah. It WILL be better. I don't even want to comment on yesterday, but I sort of will. Dana....sorry I was the biggest bitch ever. If you thought your time in the car was bad...man oh man. We almost got sandwiched between two mac trucks at 5 am this morning. Yep, 5am. I've never heard my dad drop the f-bomb so many times. We didn't get home until 7:30 this morning. My dad wouldn't let me drive at first, but I forced him to pull over and let me drive around 6:30 am when I noticed that he was starting to doze off. I rushed back to Stonehill this morning for my class, which was a freakin' waste of my energy. I should have listened to Emm when she said "fuck school". My car is supposed to be teal, but it's almost all white now from all the salt on the roads and the crap that the 5 million trucks we passed spewed all over us. ANYWAY, I'm glad we made it to the show last night, even if we missed most of it. It was great seeing Emm, Meg, and Nini jam together. And the Fire truck siren improv was spectacular. Yeah. They are "officially" listed in the christain genre. And this is yet another reason why I dislike when groups get labelled into a single category. If you were to listen to most of there stuff, you would virtually have no clue as to their christian lineage. For instance, their 2000 release "The Best of Plum" really only features one song that has any sort of religious connotation to it ("God-shaped hole"). The rest just plain rock out! In fact, I've been listening to this CD for the last week as I have gotten ready for work. Very few CDs can hold my attention for an entire week in the same time slot. This one has. I have friends that listen to quite a bit of Christian music, and must admit that many of the bands put too much emphasis on the lyrical message and not a lot of emphasis on original, catchy musical content. I believe that Plumb is able to succeed where many have not - have original, multi-layered music with a catchy chorus and a good message. On a sidenote, when I recently sought out Plumb's CD in Best Buy, I came across Tara's Passenger also in the "Christian" section. It looks like another case of the multi-genre musician.
