Writing it down in poetry... And if the poetry isn't cheese.. then it is totally OUT THERE.. and you need to be in-the-know to totally understand... I also find with poetry and music.... Some lyrics and prose may seem even more brilliant when you yourself are experiencing some of the same emotions posed by the writing... By all means, I will still pick up Emm's book of poetry when it comes out and only after I have read it will i decide what i think of it... Lyrics and poetry are not the same thing at all. I remember taking a poetry class my senior year of college which was taught by this award winning PhD. (great guy, I learned SO much) and I would turn in my "poems" all excited and would get them back covered w/ red marks because I had really turned in a page of lyrics (hehe, tried to cheat that way I guess ;) )... If I had more time and it was more interesting, I could get in to the difference between the two, but I'm at work and somehow don't think my boss will understand why I'm writing this if he comes in and sees me:) Anyway, I'll be interested to see Emm's stuff... I haven't really read Jewel's poetry so I can't comment... I won't comment on her lyrics either because I'm still getting emails from Jewel fans (recently too) over a remark I made about her like 2 years ago on my website *sigh*... I thought that the host was the worst part of the show. they could have done way better. otherwise the only saving grace was that the usuals didn't win, i.e. nsync, Brittany Spears, etc. was nice to see U2 get some luv. even though I don't really like them I do appreciate their integrity. some really good performances like Macy Gray and Moby and Faith Hill. missed Madonna but was diligent enough to stay up and see the Eminem/Elton less than hyped duet. one I'm sure that will not be featured on Elton's next duet album. but nothing to write home about overall. who is Shelby Lynn? just curious. my mom thinks she needs to wear more clothing. was it a clothing optional awards show this year? all in all, just like prince's emancipation 3 disk opus, I think it could have been summed up in an hour and a half. rating: *** what was yours Jess? jay ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 13:45:15 -0500 From: Michael Keast Subject: RE: everybody hates poetry > So who else thought the Grammys sucked? Writing it down in >poetry... > >And if the poetry isn't cheese.. then it is totally OUT THERE.. and you >need to be in-the-know to totally understand... I disagree with that. I think there are lots of great modern poets out there; I'm especially impressed/inspired by the likes of Gwendolyn MacEwan, Lorna Crozier, etc. Oftentimes poetry need not be about the writer's emotions at all; poetry, to me, is first and foremost about imagery. I think people need to take poetry a lot less "seriously" -- it's not entirely necessary to *understand* everything that's in the poem, just like you don't always understand every single image or metaphor in modern literature. But if you can relate to a few things in a poem, or you like a poet's choice of vocabulary or their diction, then that's "good enough". Poetry is overrated as an emotional vehicle; most of the time I don't think it is. Poetry need not be cathartic, therapeutic or heart-wrenchingly emotional; to me, the core of poetry is "cleverness with words" and oftentimes poems describe nothing more than everyday situations or images. What distinguishes it from prose is that poetry forces you to choose your words much more carefully. Good poetry is hard work; great poetry is much harder work than great prose. - - Julian [ Julian C. I know a song called "Fish Heads", but I don't think it's by Dr. Demento, it's by some old comedy duo (Barnes & Barnes, or something like that). The lyrics go like this: "Fish heads, fish heads, roly poly fish heads Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up, yum!" I'm sure my saying this will make me the list cynic for awhile but that's cool by me:) **this is my personal opinion, it's cool if you don't agree w/ me** Rating: * While I didn't see the entire show (flipped between that and Temptation Island--I'm not sure which is worse! ;) ), I thought it was extremely poorly done... The first thing I noticed was the audio--terrible sound. That was something someone in my office who also watched said as well... I thought Jon Stewart--who actually IS a funny guy--was not funny at all... The presenters were not prepared, not funny, and not interesting (I guess a few exceptions?)... the performers didn't blow me away either. Madonna was just o.k... The Moby/Jill Scott/Blue Man Group thing was o.k... Apparently Cristina Aguilera was good but I didn't see that. I'm glad that Paul Simon was nominated for his new album and performed... depressing album, but very beautiful. Was also glad to see Beck and Radiohead nominated (thought one of them would surely take the album of the year. Oh well)... The Eminem/Elton John thing was so, SO lame... and where was Dido? I'm *sure* she would've made herself available for the Grammys, right? :) I could go on but I won't bore you all. I think most people know the Grammys are lame and that's it's about the albums that impacted the media (even if they were not necessarily good albums) over the past year... so many of those bands did not work their way to the top, but were placed at the top, and I think that's sad... The whole thing reminds me of a song on Frank Zappa's Tinseltown Rebellion (GREAT album)... about bands you go to see and not to hear... Oh, well, what really can you expect from an awards show?
