(08) DJ Dara - From Here to There - slick, sick beats (07) DJ Sushi - Lost Dub Plates ep - fun and funny, but with excellent beats (06) Oh Susanna - Sleepy Little Sailor - her best work yet (05) Shivaree - I Oughta Give You a Shot in the Head - charming (04) Starling - Sustainer - duh (03) Sarah Harmer - You Were Here - duh ;-) (02) the New Deal - Live from Guelph ON CAN ep - brilliant, the best jam band on this planet (01) St. Germaine - "Tourist" As I wrote this summer: St. Germain Tourist EMI Music/Bluenote www.bluenote.com www.emimusic.ca St. Germain, one of the big names in French electronica (aka Ludovic Navarre), has and will continue to have a lasting influence on new music. Using very invigorating jazz clips and lots of sampling and a very trancy/techno feel, Tourist is all about subtle brilliance. Although this is his first recording in around 5 years, we've felt his continued influence on the scene through bands like Daft Punk and Air. There is no small measure of genius in being able to blend and compose jazz into techno. Take "Montego Bay Spleen" for example, the samples are crafted and used with all the marvelous subtlety of a Beaudelaire poem. If you forget or listen beyond the jazz riffs, this is a superb dance album. St. Germain (under various pseudonyms) has always been on the cutting edge of music and this is the case here, Tourist will slip under the radar of the large majority of the electronica crowd. Such a shame; this is the true alternative music. And looking forward to (potential) 2001 releases from: Emm, Sarah Slean, Ivana Santilli, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Veda Hille, Solar Twins, Moonstarr and Feist (Monarch was just the beginning!) James. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 10:48:34 -0800 (PST) From: Marla Tiara Subject: Quick intro... Hi everyone. I'm new to the list (but I peeked at the archives and it looks like a fabulous place to be!) and somewhat new to Emm Gryner fandom. I've had Public for a while, as well as Public Speaking, and recently got a copy of um...can we talk about *whisper* bootlegs here? So when I was in Toronto last week I bought The Original Leap Year, Dead Relatives and Science Fair and now I'm wondering what took me so long. I love her! :) (Lately I'm all about Candian female singer-songwriters, actually - including Sarah Slean, Sarah Harmer, etc...) I saw in an earlier post that Emm is playing in Boston at Emily's on the 23rd. Is this correct? Emily's is an unusual venue - in fact, I didn't even know they hosted live music. But if it's true, I'll probably be going. Anyway, I know Girl Versions and And Distrust It are impossible to find, but if anyone out there has them and ever felt like making copies for someone...like me maybe... In a nutshell, I'm Marla, I'm 27, I'm from Boston and I love music. If you're bored, go check out my webpage :) I'll be quiet now. :) marla tiara ===== ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Famous people wearing my tiara: http://www.marlatiara.com (*updated 9/21/00 - All pictures active!)
