HONORABLE MENTIONS: david gray's "white ladder", dandy warhol's "13 tales of urban bohemia", sarah harmer's "you were here", emm gryner's "dead relatives", air's "virgin suicides" score, the beatles' "1"... #5 BLACK EYED PEAS'S "BRIDGING THE GAP" i don't know what it is about the BEP album that makes me like it so. perhaps it's the fact that most albums with cool guest musicians intrigue me. but c'mon, esthero, macy gray, wyclef and de la soul? i'll take it! thank you black eyed peas for not swearing in every line, thanks for being groovy. i'll never be a hip-hop connisseur, but at least there's the BEP making me think that perhaps i should pay hip-hop more attention. reminds me of...: "what's with...cheese?" favourite tracks: "bep empire", "rap song", "bridging the gap" and "request + line" #4 JOSH ROUSE'S "HOME" i love this CD, for the same reason i love sarah harmer's "you were here": simply intimacy; it is a combination of what he sings about, his voice, the truth of his lyrics, but most of all it's b/c joshy tells me, "you are a star" in "marvin gaye"...and i believe him. reminds me of...: being the designated driver on summer nights favourite tracks: "laughter", "hey porcupine", "in between" #3 NELLY FURTADO'S "WHOA, NELLY!" okay, forget "i'm like a bird"...it was great the first 50 times, but now radio has destroyed it. besides, this bird analogy is pretty stilly when you think about it. however, nelly furtado is one cool girl, and this CD is just plain ol' groovalicious fun! despite the cheesey album title, the 'chick' is poised for huge stardom. hell, people already hate her, and you know you're famous when people complain about little things like how you move your lips when singing. reminds me of...: holiday retail madness at roots kids favourite tracks: "...on the radio", "turn off the light" #2 TEGAN AND SARA'S "THIS BUSINESS OF ART" i remember coming across their names on radiosonic's web site over a year ago. i thought it was pretty cool that a couple twins my age were becoming popular playing their guitars, singing and writing songs. but "i don't need anymore chicks with guitar music," i thought to myself. "like we really need more jewel..." so i went on my merry little way without giving them a chance. big mistake! thankfully, i've had the opportunity to redeem myself and am grateful. august would have been even crappier had i not been given "this business of art". the girls with guitars thing has definitely been done, but thankfully tegan and sara make it original by limiting the whining and adding their own bite. it's a wicked, confident album -perfect for summer driving. bonus: i got paid to listen to it. reminds me of...: hospital waiting rooms favourite tracks: "the first", "my number", "not with you" *#1 COLDPLAY'S "PARACHUTES"* it was the beautiful simplicity of "yellow" that reeled me in. at first listen to the whole album, i was dissapointed to find a song that paralelled that track's melodic hooks. but although coldplay wasn't the pop-rock band i was expecting, i'm eternally grateful i bought this album. people may compare them to travis; lead singer chris martin may sound a little like jeff buckley on "shiver", but there's something about coldplay that makes me feel like i've never heard anything like them before. i realize that it's really just a guitar-piano-bass-drums combination, but they manage to make it sound so much better than almost everything i've heard this year. it's mellow and has the ability to make me both sad and happy at the same time. if i die in the next year, someone please make sure "sparks" and "everything's not lost" is played at my funeral. reminds me of...: bubble baths favourite tracks: "everything's not lost", "trouble", "sparks" that's it...i'm going to send this now before i feel the need to change anything else. everyone have a safe and enjoyable new year...i'm just glad 2000 is over. peace, love and health to all! - -take care, andrea http://home.istar.ca/~andyc/me/portfolio ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Dec 2000 18:13:13 EST From: Songbird22@aol.com Subject: best / worst of 2000 best / worst of 2000 best albums: - -tegan and sara "this business of art" - -leona naess "comatised" - -kyler "if the world would just end" - -radiohead "kid a" - -fisher "true north" - -unbelievable truth (RIP :( ) "sorrythankyou" - -meghan toohey "eight so low" "romantic blunder #8" (heavenly!) - -coldplay "parachutes" - -josh rouse "home" worst albums: - -britney spears "oops i did it again" (oh the slaughtering of "satisfaction", oh the horror of it all :) ) - -backstreet boys "black and blue" (ew) honorable mentions: - -emm gryner "dead relatives" - -maren ord "waiting" - -vertical horizon "everything you want" - -sarah hamer "you were here" favorite artist discoveries of the year: - -john lardieri - a male ani. amazingly talented, super sexy voice, thoughtful/smart lyrics. very nice guy. the ink is drying on the major label contract as i write this... - -katie reider - -meghan toohey - awesome, awesome, awesome! - -the clash - -the kinks - -kyler england - -sheila nicholls - -melissa ferrick anticipated for 2001 (things i'm excited about!) - -jonatha brooke "steady pull" (out feb 13th, pre-orders start 010101!) - -bic runga (who knows when it's out) - -radiohead "amnesiac" - -darcie miner's major label debut - -patty griffin "silver bell" - -sarah slean - -emm gryner - -so many other indie albums i'm excited for... don't have room to list them all.... favorite moments of 2000 - -getting married :))) - -buying my first new car (2000 chevy blazer--GREAT truck!) - -seeing the YANKEES beat the mets in the world series! worst moments of 2000 - -george w. bush "winning" the US Presidential Election (god help us!) - -every day i spent at my lame job - -not getting my new album done--it WILL be out by may 1st 2001 happy new year and all the best to everyone for a happy/healthy 2001 :) jess www.jessicaweiser.com | mp3.com/jessweiser ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Dec 2000 18:24:45 EST From: Zelie519@aol.com Subject: USED CD Shopping (in America) Hey all!!
