Soaring melodies, an enchanting falsetto voice singing about things that you know must be important (but not a word in English), radio static, sonar pings, phase shifted notes from an accordion?, feedback from a bowed guitar, a volcano rumbling?, primal roars from ancient beasts (or it just the bass part?)... - ----------- But now I see why Radiohead chose Sigur Ros as their support band:They're simply stunning. - --------------- Delicate walls of guitar feedback and rich basslines await the patient listener, but you'll also have to negotiate a disconsolate falsetto and Icelandic lyrics that are pushed up in the mix on this album. - ---------------- The unique mix of the traditional instruments in modern music (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard) with the new (processed noises, feedback, distortion, white noise, reverb) and even the antiquated (orchestra, chamber music, chorale pieces) - all this - makes for a listen that is unlike anything you have experienced before. - --------------- ...producing shamelessly tear-stained epics that comfortably pass as classical music for the 21st century, and then some.....little wonder radiohead are such committed sigurettes. - ---------------- the huge rolling noises created by a violin bow screeching across electric guitar blend perfectly with lead singer jonsi's beautifully placed lyrics - a mixture of icelandic and his very own made-up language, hopelandish, apparently. - ------------------ sigur rss are part spiritualised and part enya with the immense epic sonic vistas of godspeed you black emperor! the northern lights are blazing bright again. - ------------------- somewhere between spiritualized, a traditional madrigal group and slowdive with liz fraser on vocals, this is exactly as you'd hope a band from just beneath the artic circle would sound like. sigur rss' debut uk ep is so delicately beautiful, you feel as though you're trespassing by listening to something this intimate, yet they retain the magestic crackly force of mogwai. with the volume turned down, naturally. by the time it rumbles to a close, you realise you've been holding your breath in awe. - -------------------------- the album begins submerged. sonar pings echo from liquid feedback-- invisible in a handful, but crushing you like an ocean in its volume. soon a cathedral organ moans. wire brushes drum in a sinking pace. a violin bow saws open the maw of massive guitar, spreading noise in clouds of blood. siren jsn thsr birgisson sings through every orifice-- including gills, perhaps-- creating the most inhuman vocals ever heard in rock (though skywalker sound could attempt a chewbacca-esque approximation by blending whales, jeremy enigk, cherubs, bjvrk, and the blue alien from "the fifth element"). the song ends in an accelerating heartbeat that breaks into palpitations. sound fizzles out. you're dead. - ------------------------------------- I left feeling as if I4d attended a strange ritual combining classical music, avant-garde rock, and a mass. Sigur Rss manages to bring the ethreal feel of a Philip Glass opera together with the ambiant tone of Radiohead, the serene, tortured vocals of a gregorian chant performed by Smashing Pumpins, with occational ephiphanic peaks of driving drums and impelling base echoing the rage of Tool; and yet the totality is their own. The concert was more like a trance, I wanted the audience to stop clapping between songs so I could simply float between waves of sound and silence in this extraordinary realm the band managed to create - they performed like classical musicians rather than rock-stars, not speaking, not posing, merely playing their ethreal mucis and leaving the audience in some transubstatiatory state.
