Sitting at my desk. Wondering if I would make it till 5 pm. The mayor of Buffalo came over the radio and announced that government buildings would be closing at 1pm. I had a chance. Sure enough, the director at the gallery announced we would get out at 1 as well. Only days before I had ordered my tickets online to see Emm in Toronto. Would this adverse weather push me from my goal? Of course not. My girlfriend and I set off a little before 7pm and took detours to get to the Peace Bridge (due to the road closings and snow). Three hours later (it's a 2 hour drive in normal conditions) we would pull up to Ted's Wrecking Yard, the site of the show. Since it was after 8:30 (the time when all ticketmaster locations close) and I needed to pick up our tickets, I figured we could pick them up at the door. This was not the case. I pleaded my case to the nice woman at the door, and she was gracious enough to let us in without tickets. Thank you. The Fembots opened. They were very cool. I recommend them to everyone. If I had any money left (and in the appropriate currency) I would have picked up a CD. We sat 5 feet from the stage on the floor for Emm. She was great, as were her other 3 stage companions. Not much more to say about that. Case of Tornados rocked. For those of you in the know "flyerman " was there. The crazy guy with the jacket and pants that light up. I saw him at Summersault in Barrie this summer. After the show I was able to thank the door lady again and say hello to Emm. Then it was time to head home. After all I had work Thursday morning and an 11:15pm hockey game the next night. When we got back to the car I saw a familiar sight. A parking ticket. I am an old pro at receiving these in Toronto. I always figure it's better than being towed. Another 3 hour drive home on the ice and with big trucks cruising by, and I found my cold bed waiting. Even with all of the side events, I chalk up the night as a success. Definately worth it. I'll do it again, and so should you. Later headliners....apologies for my longest post ever (by far). Dunn" Subject: Re: Ted's Wrecking Yard (the first show) Hrm, it seems Dave is the only headliner who has thus far posted a review. Rannie, where are you? You're usually quite verbose with this stuff :) I'll say a few things: a) I did not like the Fembots particularly. (Note: contrary to initial impressions one might garner from their name, they are, in fact, a duo of two guys) Their 'music' is rather along the lines of Sook-Yin Lee -- at one point one of the fellows pulled out a balloon and started 'playing' it. Much of their repertoire is set to strange recorded noises that's on spools of tape they bring with them. Unfortunately, their tape machine broke about 2/3 of the way through the performance; hence the danger in relying too much on equipment with moving parts during a live show. b) Emm was quite good, although I can't say it's the best show I've seen. One reason for that is that the audience was, strangely, less than enthusiastic. Even after Emm's last number, the smattering of applause for the encore was lukewarm at best. [1] Nevertheless, she did quite a variety of material from all the albums, and a couple of new songs, including "Santa Monica" which I really enjoyed. And she did an admirable job pulling off the Def Leppard cover, even though she had to stop in the middle herself to laugh at the terrible lyrics. :-) - - Julian [1] Aside from that whacked guy in the suit that lit up. Maybe she just does it with the band, I'm not sure, but the ending she usually does when she's playing it solo (the one where she ends with 'Nooooo') is mucchhh more effective IMO. Anyhow, I'm just posting to let you know (as someone else did previously) that Emm's show has been archived in full at www.primeticket.net ! 60+MB of Real Video goodness. :) Here's the complete set list with times. Two quotes I like that stood out:) are: "Adds Rickie Lee Jones, "Ninety percent of people in the record industry wouldn't know a good song if it called them on their cellphones. I don't think anyone has anything against singer/songwriters personally; there's just a general malaise, a decline in things artistic." " " "There's a tremendous underground swell of songwriters and players who have no interest in who or what the latest pop sensation is," Paul Simon says. "The whole concept of stars is bogus, anyway. What's a star compared to a song that lasts 100 years? Nothing. Absolutely nothing."" Anyway, there's some interesting things in it! Don't get me wrong, she has a beautiful voice and i'm sure she is a very nice person, and her album rocks as well. But sometimes people don't have any other talent than singing what other people write(ahem, Britney, Christina), and I have less respect for them because of it. It's the creativeness about music that makes it cool and if you don't > contribute to the creativity, it doesn't mean as much. It's funny, there is an argument on another list about all of this... Again, I think your voice is an instrument and a part of the creative process, though I do see what you're saying, Trish. Although I wouldn't say I have less respect for someone who just sings, or just plays a musical instrument... I dunno. By the way, as far as Fisher goes, I do prefer their indie album over True North--it's sort of like Leap Year vs. Public... Jessica np: "Saturday Night" (the new songs are interesting.
