That has been the easy part of the 25-year-old's career. Granted, Gryner was standing behind David Bowie at the time -- drafted in as back-up vocalist following his 1999 album '... hours.' "I got to see all the glamour," says the Canadian singer-songwriter, now back in solo mode and hosting her own two-night stand at Ted's Wrecking Yard tomorrow and Thursday in support of her current CD, Dead Relatives. "I got a free glimpse of superstardom from the inside, without having to experience all that goes with it," Gryner says. Odd then, that Gryner still gets those pre-gig jitters that one might expect would have evaporated somewhere between Wembley Stadium and Ted's Wrecking Yard. "I didn't find the large crowds intimidating because it's like singing to wallpaper in a way," Gryner says. "The only time I was intimidated was the first day, 'cause I'm really skeptical and I never imagine that things will take shape. I mean, when you're singing Ziggy Stardust to 50-year-old people who are hardcore fans, you just can't f--- it up. "But I still find small crowds really scary. When it's a large crowd, the experience of playing is about them and not about you, whereas, if you're playing a living room and there's 20 people watching, they can see every little movement. "There's nothing to hide behind and it becomes about you." Gryner hasn't let any trepidations get in the way of her creative output. An undeniably prolific, even plucky, songwriter, she has averaged an album a year since debuting with The Original Leap Year, released on her own Dead Daisy label in 1996. She was snapped up in an ill-fated deal with Mercury in the U.S. the following year, generating mixed reviews and, ultimately, a bit of good, old-fashioned industry ill-will with 1998's Public. Dropped in the wake of the Universal-Polygram merger, Gryner dutifully switched on her eight-track porta-studio, laid down last year's album Science Fair and racked up her best reviews and sales to date. There were even enough outtakes and rarities left for Dead Relatives. Gryner says she hasn't ruled out another major-label deal, but with self-sufficiency starting to pay off, what's the point? "There have been offers," she says. "I think I'll stay indie in Canada, because I've never been able to see what major labels can offer here. In terms of other parts of the world, you can't take it on by yourself unless you're willing to slave for a good 15 years, watching your Kraft Dinner boil. "I think there's a middle ground, especially with all the resources that are available to artists today. I do think the record business is screwed up -- like most of the entertainment world -- but that doesn't make me bitter. I just realize, okay it's screwed up, how do you handle it?" The singer has been at work in England recently on tracks with Sheryl Crow associate Mike Rowe. She also has relocated to the Catskills, near Woodstock, N.Y., where she "locked herself away in the woods to write." "It's fun to perform those songs now 'cause they're still fresh in your mind," she says. "You're still angry at the person you wrote them about, or you're still in love with the person you wrote them about. "But I'd like to get into a studio. I've kind of had it with recording in my bedroom." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2000 01:36:29 -0800 From: Bob Subject: OLP & CK I suspect the new Our Lady Peace cd out next week will be on my top ten list for the year. I was reading that Raine Maida of OLP and his wife Chantal Kreviazuk will be in a movie called Century Hotel. Sort of an Altmanesque, stories taking place in a hotel over time film. Raine plays 'a reclusive, drugged out sixties musician who is seduced by a hotel maid (Kreviazuk) who steals his songs.' Chantal will also be appearing in a new Canadian tv drama/comedy series about the music industry called Big Sounds, as herself. The episode features her manager trying to get her song on the radio, but they are denied because the dj can't pronounce her last name. :P Hmmm, I know someone else who would be good on that show... Bob, who saw The Dandy Warhols in concert last night... excellent show... Lily Frost was good, too. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Dec 2000 11:25:51 +0100 From: Johan Braennlund Subject: Re: Albums of the Year Michael Keast wrote: > > That's interesting that Nina Gordon wants to record a song with them, > especially given that their album includes a song they did with her > ex-partner Louise Post...both Nina and Louise end up working with a > little-known Swedish band, that's an awfully strange coincidence, don't you > think? :) This makes me think that my friend was probably mistaken and that it was actually Louise Post who wanted to do a song together with them. She told me it was Nina Gordon, but I guess she confused the two.
