["mark'eee" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 01:05:50 -0800 From: Bob Subject: last living room show ever? It took 3 buses, a train, an hour of waiting and a half hour walk, but I made it to the Emm living room show out in Port Coquitlam this afternoon. Host Lori-Anne was waiting on the front porch for me or any other late arrivals. Fortunately their living room was big enough to hold the 25+ people there to see Emm. Lori-Anne played 3 songs first, on the piano. She was great! Nice voice and a talent for songwriting. Emm was impressed with her too. Emm then went on and here's what she played: 1. Southern Dreamer on guitar 2. Northern Holiday on guitar 3. Half Sorry (for me!) on piano 4. Siamese Star (written in a hotel room in NY after the Ireland trip, with her mom in the room) on piano 5. Summerlong on guitar 6. Acid on piano 7. Santa Monica on piano 8. Case of Tornados on piano A bird named Elmo provided background chirping. ;) I really loved Half Sorry and Acid. Of the unreleased songs I think I like Northern Holiday the best. Emm announced that she'd be recording in January so the recently suggested Texas LR show tour wouldn't be happening, and in fact this would be' the last living room show ever.' If that's the case, the last one was an awesome one. And look for Emm to be playing some club shows in the USA in 2001. Lori-Anne's mom provided an incredible buffet after that, the likes of which I've never seen. She must be a professional caterer or something. That peeled shrimp was the culinary highlight of my day. ;) Emm and Joni were kind enough to give me a lift back to downtown Vancouver after the show, and that one hour drive was another highlight of my Emm weekend. It's fun listening to Emm do her British accent thing, or critiquing all the songs on the radio as she speed dials through the FM stations, while driving the Windstar with the other hand. It was great getting to hang out with Joni and Emm both days! Hope they come back soon. :) Bob ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 09:07:18 -0800 (PST) From: dana wagner Subject: Albums of the Year... yay, i love when we have our annual "albums of the year" discussions. of course, most of us agree on the same albums, but there are always a few added into the mix that some of us haven't heard about. i personally think this has been a FABULOUS year for music - and indie music in particular. i've discovered so many new artists, thanks in part to many of yous. so here's my list. 11. *Neal With An A - "Pseudovibe" - -debut album from neal carlson, nyc singer/songwriter. has a dave matthews-esque flavor, but very original, very funny, and pretty good lookin' as well. :) he's a friend of a friend of mine. right now he has no website, but i can keep everyone updated on info about him. 10. *Radiohead - "Kid A" - -absolutely brilliant album. many have said it's quite a divergence from their earlier stuff, but i think they are just pushing things further out in the direction Ok Computer was going. the essence of "alternative" and original music. i think there's only one song on there i couldn't get into. and the way in which these songs can be adapted brilliantly in a live setting is beyond compare. very psyched to hear what they do with the new album coming out in the spring. 9. *Erin McKeown - "Distillation" - -erin is a fabulous lyricist and guitarist with one of the most original sounds in folk music. unbelievable live performer as well. 8. *Starling - "Sustainer" - -fun rock 'n roll. i never get tired of listening to this album. every song is a gem. 7. *Leona Naess - "Comatised" - -i don't have to sell this to all of you. beautiful voice, beautiful lyrics. i just love it. 6. *Sarah Harmer - "You Were Here" - -another album i like more and more every time i listen; not a single track i'm not completely in love with. each song is original and complements one another. 5. *Holly Palmer - "Tender Hooks" - -does this count since it's not "officially" released? no bother. it is sheer brilliance. from one song to the next, it is a piece of art. i don't think there could be another album which could come even remotely close to sounding like this. a gorgeous mixture of pop, jazz, and soul. mmmmm. 4. Tegan and Sara - "This Business of Art" - -another album i laud for its originality. fun pop/rock while actually getting a message out. no mushy love songs. :) again, i love every single track for a different reason and love the entire album more and more each time i listen. 3. Emm Gryner - "Dead Relatives" - -do i need to say anything? it's emm. parting song, half sorry, mary jill, a little war, today's rock... god, this album was everything i expected and more. kudos to emm for putting out this fabulous record "for the fans" 1/2. Meghan Toohey - "Romantic Blunder #4" and "Eight So Low" - -these are her debut albums, both to be released at the same time. "romantic blunder" is a studio rock 'n roll album, and "eight so low" is a live acoustic album, recorded at a living room show. not released for another week, but still my top two. i've heard them and they are two fabulous albums. i haven't heard them enough to distinguish which i like more, but i've seen her live with the full rock band and doing the acoustic thang, both equally beautiful. gut-wrenching heartfelt ballads and fun rockin songs. she is one of the most amazing guitarists i've heard in my life. oh my GOD, you have to hear this girl play guitar. if it were just guitar on the albums, i'd still rank them as #1. but her voice is also hauntingly beautiful. she also plays piano, keyboards, and bass, and plays every instrument on the albums with the exception of drums. everyone check her out at meghantoohey.com (more mp3s coming to the site soon!). you're going to be hearing a lot more about her from me soon. she is a rock star in the making. i can't help but gush. watch out for an awesome tour of the eastern U.S. early next year. (if you are in boston, check her out NOW...residency every wednesday in december at the lizard lounge) ===== www.aquezada.com/dwagner Yahoo! Shopping - Thousands of Stores. I tried to limit myself to a Top 10, but I just couldn't do it, so here's my Top 16 instead. You'll probably notice that there's one album in particular that's conspicuous by its absence, and no, I didn't accidentally forget it...much as I hate to say this, I just don't think DR was one of the best albums of the year...please don't hate me! :) This list could very well change between now and when I post it on my music page after the year's actually over, but for now here's what it looks like: 16. J Mascis & The Fog - More Light - -The former driving force behind Dinosaur Jr comes up with an excellent solo album that carries on the DJ legacy quite nicely...welcome back, J! 15. 12 Rods - Separation Anxieties - -I love it when I pick up an album without knowing much about it and it turns out to be really good. These guys are one of my favourite new bands of the year (well, new to me, anyway)...quirky, catchy pop/rock at its best. 14. Aimee Mann - Bachelor No. 2 - -Aimee's soundtrack was pretty much the only thing I liked about Magnolia...this album takes the best tracks from that soundtrack and adds a whole bunch of other great songs. One of the most underrated songwriters working today, in my books. 13. The Appleseed Cast - Mare Vitalis - -Another great new discovery for me this year...I picked this up on a whim after reading a brief review in Exclaim, and it turned out to be one of the best discs I bought all year. This record pretty much restored my faith in the emotional power of guitar rock...I still get a rush every time I listen to it. (Vortex Records has had a copy of this album sitting in their "Misc. A" section for the longest time...someone really should go buy it!) 12. Iron Maiden - Brave New World - -No list is complete without the token metal album, right? :) What else can I say...the best album in more than 10 years from one of heavy music's most legendary bands 11.Leona Naess - Comatised - -I've got my fellow headliners to thank for this one, as I picked it up after several of you recommended it. I'm sure we've all plugged this album enough, so I'll spare you the details, let's just say that every time I listen to this I hear something new that I really like. 10. Dilated Peoples - The Platform - -Most of the best hip-hop these days seems to be coming out of the Los Angeles underground scene, and this is a prime example of that. I'm not sure how many fans of this kind of music we have on this list, but if the only hip-hop you know is Eminem and Jay-Z, you really should check this out, you might learn something. 9. Coldplay - Parachutes - -I picked this up in the UK while I was there this summer...they were just starting to get big over there, and with good reason. This record is simply breathtaking...fans of Travis and Bends-era Radiohead are especially urged to pick this up, if you haven't already. 8. Juliana Hatfield - Beautiful Creature - -I'm always amazed at how consistently excellent Juliana's songwriting is...every one of her albums is just fantastic, and this one is no exception. 7. The Drowners - Is There Something On Your Mind? - -Insanely catchy guitar rock, from Finland of all places. Imagine a cross between Starling and the Foo Fighters, and you'll have some idea of what they sound like. 6. Ugly Duckling - Journey To Anywhere - -More excellent hip-hop from the LA underground. Note to anyone who thinks Eminem is the only decent white rapper in the world: you're wrong, and this album is the proof. 5. Jurassic 5 - Quality Control - -More excellent hip-hop from the LA underground (is there an echo in here?). Proof positive that intelligent, socially conscious music can also be incredibly entertaining. 4. Starling - Sustainer - -With Weeping Tile currently on hiatus, Starling are my new favourite Canadian band, for the time being at least. This is some of the best pop-inspired guitar rock I've ever heard...simply a blast to listen to. 3. Smashing Pumpkins - Machina/The Machines of God - -The Pumpkins are responsible for what I consider to be the greatest album in the history of recorded music (Siamese Dream), so obviously I wasn't too thrilled about them calling it quits, but at least they went out on a high note. This record combines the mellower electro-pop of Adore with the rawk of their older stuff to great effect, and includes some of the best songs Billy Corgan has ever written. 2. Nina Gordon - -I always thought Nina was the better of the two songwriters in Veruca Salt, and this album proves my point. This is simply a gorgeous piece of work that deserves to be heard by a lot more people than it has. 1. Sarah Harmer - You Were Here - -I'm sure I've already gone on about this album enough, so I'll spare you another rave review. Just go buy it, already! :) ************************************************* Mike Keast (michael.keast@giffels.com) http://www.geocities.com/dtswd/ "thank god i've got 3 minutes to tell you what i did today" ************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 16:33:13 -0500 From: "James McGarry" Subject: Re: Albums this year - ----- Original Message ----- From: "spark" Sent: Saturday, November 25, 2000 4:23 PM > > > 3. I saw Sarah Harmer live less than a > month ago and that song is actually the ONLY one that I felt had any emotion > or passion coming from her as she sang it! ;) > > I still don't get the Sarah Harmer thing --- yet... :) (Don't hurt me!!) Took me a while too... several Weeping Tile gigs anyway. ... I LOVE "Lodestar", but it needs a cool breeze and water and you have to wait for someplace like Hillside for that... some stuff that's not her own she does well, with loads of passion, Nancy Griffith's "Trouble in the Fields" and "Mercy Bin" from fellow Kingstonian Trevor Richardson (Hellbillies). Still, there's stuff like "Coffee Stain" where see seems to need the audience to be there for her and a good audience definitely feeds her performance. Anytime she can jam with Luther (Wright and the Wrongs) or pals like Sarah Slean she's twice as good. She takes a few listens or a good live gig to truly appreciate and all of her songs age well. YMMV. James. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 19:24:16 -0500 From: Isaac Greenwald Subject: NEC Anyone Know if Nina Gordon is playing some kinda gig at Now's lounge in T.O? I was lucky enough to have him appear on an unreleased song I recorded in Jan. or Feb. this year. I have been busy putting some new demo tracks up on mp3.com and other online music sites and put up the song finally! Unfortunately the studio we recorded it in was **Bad** and the mix is horrible... and there are rough piano and rough vocal tracks (i was sick the day i did vocals:( ). Geez, I shouldn't tell you guys all this. ;) Anyway, please view it as a demo and not the finished version... but Cuong is amazing... He came in the studio and did his 3 tracks all on the first take each time and they were incredible... He extremely talented and I'm glad he agreed to play on the track (hope I can get him for more sometime! :) ). So check it out (as well as another new demo "The Deconstruction Of David's Wall" as well as an instrumental I wrote which is being considered for a film--"Within" will be up tomorrow) at mp3.com/jessweiser. My full-length album (long overdue by now) will be out in spring 2001! Finally! :) And it is a dramatic departure from anything you've heard from me. I haven't decided if this song will appear or not, but perhaps. :) Thanks! Email me w/ any feedback!
