Her honest approach to music and songwriting is an endearing quality, making the 25 year-old singer/songwriter from Forest, Ontario one of the most unique and talented performers in the country. "I feel like I have a way of saying things with writing that I can't normally achieve through speaking," says Gryner. "I guess that is probably the gift and I'm trying to get better at it." Gryner's latest gift to her fans is a collection of previously released songs from her early days. Dead Relatives is a captivating album complete with Gryner's lyrical magic and angelic voice. She reflects on where she started and comments that many of the songs were recorded at her home with synthesizers. "Because they're older, it is definitely more humbling to put this out," says Gryner. "It's sort of an exercise of letting go of the early songs and admitting where you have come from, in a way. A lot of the songs are just sort of me sitting in my room with a drum machine and some bad synthesizers...It's kind of a big mish-mash of different songs and production levels and that sort of thing." Gryner's unique take on life and love translates well to her fans. She admits that 80-90 per cent of her songs are based on personal experiences. One song on the latest release entitled "Parting Song" was written as Gryner returned home on a bus from New York. "It's based on personal experience because it's about someone that I was horribly in love with. But on the other hand, it's also a bit fictitious because it's a song that, and it sounds a bit morbid, but it's a song that I would imagine giving to someone if I thought I wasn't going to be around for a long time," says Gryner. "Not to get all new-age, but if you think about your own mortality it definitely brings out your deepest feelings. In a lot of ways, its like my favourite love song." Although Gryner was dropped from her label in 1999 due to a merger between Mercury Records and Universal Music, she hasn't been sitting around. She released Science Fair, a second independent disc on her label Dead Daisy Records in 1999 which actually surpassed the sales of the 1998 A&M recording Public. She has been touring and singing backup vocals for David Bowie and her song "Southern Dreamer" is featured in the new Asian American film The Debut. For Gryner, there is no hurry to get back onto a major label. "I would if I thought there was a label that believed in artist development, but right now I think anyone who wants to sign is pretty much out of their heads unless it's an extraordinary circumstance. I think there's so much that you can do on your own and I'd really like to exhaust that before I think about going back to one." She has recently parted with her manager of four years, Michael Murphy. "I think a manager/artist relationship is pretty complex sometimes," says Gryner. "Michael Murphy was very instrumental in helping me realize who I am but also at the same time, I think there's a danger of getting too inside the relationship...I just thought it was best for both of us to kind of take a break." Gryner is not sure what style her next album will take after the rich musical sounds of Public and the acoustic Science Fair but says that it is going to be recorded in the studio and released next year. "It's definitely going to be a studio album because I have kind of got my fill of recording at home and doing the bedroom recording thing," laughs Gryner. "I think that more and more people are doing that now. It's definitely a larger sort of production but, because I'm co-producing it, I think it's kind of staying within my focus. I'm not quite sure how to describe it. I know every song will kind of be different from each other, so I'm excited about that." Gryner's current tour pairs her with Ron Sexsmith, stopping at Louis' Pub in the University of Saskatchewan's Place Riel in Saskatoon on November 22nd. Gryner sees Sexsmith as a legend and is excited about the opportunity to play with him. Gryner's compilation CD, Dead Relatives is available at her shows and online at www.emmgryner.com. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Nov 2000 14:24:47 -0500 From: rturingan@dico.com Subject: NEC: Beach Action, place your vote I guess it is kinda significant that we got snow here in Toronto today.
