Dunn" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 04:07:12 -0400 (EDT) From: "Julian C. Dunn" Subject: [NEC] Women's Issues Network benefit gig I know it's almost 4 a.m. and I really ought to be in bed right now, but I just wanted to say a few things about the benefit gig I attended in London tonight. It was great to see everyone again, since I haven't seen people like Trish since what, June? or something. Great bunch of people, all ye headliner/Fumbler/misc. types :) Chelle started things off with a few old songs and a few new ones that I haven't heard (e.g. "Jersey" -- which is a pretty neat song). I also peeked at the new artwork for the album cover, which looks really professional (not that I didn't love the whole ghetto-purple-construction-paper first edition.) Next Trish played four or five songs, including two non-album songs - "Sweet" and "Malcolm". I've definitely heard "Malcolm" before, but I don't know if I've heard "Sweet" before -- anyway, it's definitely not what you think it is about. Once again, "Malcolm" falls into the category of "another Tricia Concepcion song that I would love to hear on a real piano" -- for what that's worth. Lindi was up third and despite some sound problems, she surprised me by playing a number of slower, more pensive songs (along with the classic Lindi-rock-out-style songs) Across this palette of varied material I really see that Lindi's a very talented performer -- she's always "on" as far as being a performer is concerned. Good on ya, Lindi! (as the Australians would say) And finally was the energetic pseudo-duo of Erin Smith and Janine Stoll. Erin has her own eponymous band which she usually plays with, and Janine plays with _Dirty Little Secret_, but they said that they play together once in a while. Kind of along the lines of Brothers Creegan, Mad Violet, etc. I suppose. Anyways, they are both quite energetic and funky musicians and they mesh well together despite allusions (from Erin) about lack of practicising... hey, that never stopped anyone! It also helps that their musical influences are bands/musicians I also like -- they covered K's Choice's "Not An Addict" and finished off with a scream-therapy cover of Tracy Bonham's "Mother Mother" (although, to be honest, I think Tracy /still/ screams louder than the two of them -- coincidentally, I happened to have a tape of the album in the car) So altogether it was definitely worth the drive to London (gee, I sound like an Olde Hide House commercial) -- great music and great friends. Now only if I could do something about the traffic on the 401 (there was a traffic jam at 3 a.m. just outside Toronto, can you believe it?) ... - - Julian [ Julian C.
